Fans have been waiting to hear news about The Kane Chronicles for a while now. The series of books written by Rick Riordan follows siblings Sadie and Carter Kane, revealed to be descendants of the Egyptian pharaohs Ramses the Great and Narmer. Consisting of three books, The Red Pyramid, The Throne of Fire, and The Serpent’s Shadow, The Kane Chronicles are set in the same universe as Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
This is why fans were disappointed that Disney had the rights to develop just the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series and not The Kane Chronicles, or the Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard series. However, it seems that the wait for one of the series from the Percy Jackson Universe, The Kane Chronicles, is over. Nexus Point News published a report in May 2025 that Disney has the rights to bring Carter and Sadie Kane to life.
However, it is important to note that this news should be taken with a grain of salt. But given that Rick Riordan himself confirmed that Netflix's planned Kane Chronicles movie Trilogy isn't moving forward anymore, it is likely that Disney might've acquired the rights.
What happened to Netflix's The Kane Chronicles Trilogy?
On September 13, 2020, Percy Jackson and the Olympians author Rick Riordan offered some respite to his fans across the world as they were still reeling from the anxiety of the pandemic. Riordan revealed that he and Netflix were collaborating to adapt the tale of siblings Carter and Sadie Kane for a movie trilogy. Had The Kane Chronicles film trilogy happened, it would've adapted the three books titled:
- The Red Pyramid (2010)
- The Throne of Fire (2011)
- The Serpent's Shadow (2012)
Rick Riordan released this statement while announcing the movie trilogy for The Kane Chronicles:
“Hey everybody, want some more exciting news? We’re developing ‘The Kane Chronicles’ as feature films for Netflix. More news soon.”
He further wrote:
“We have been working on this deal since last October, about the same time we started working on Percy, and I’m so glad I can now announce it! That’s all I can say for the moment, but stay tuned.”
This news was met with excitement amongst the fans of Riordan's work. However, some were also disappointed that the adaptations being developed by Netflix would mean that Carter and Sadie would never meet Percy, Annabeth, and Grover like they do in the pages of Rick Riordan's book. However, Rick Riordan's answer to a fan on Goodreads brought back hope in the hearts of the fans in February 2024. It read:
“Right now, Kane Chronicles is in ‘turnaround,’ which means Netflix has decided not to move forward and their option has lapsed after trying for two years to develop a script they liked. Now it depends on whether another studio would like to step in, assume the preproduction costs, and move forward. This is not at all unusual. It happens, I would guess, with the majority of film projects. Also, the streaming industry as a whole is shrinking their development slate right now, meaning they are cancelling more content and making less content. Kane got caught in that trend, despite the strong success of Percy TV.”
While some might be disappointed by the cancellation of the film trilogy, it should be noted that if Disney indeed has acquired the rights to The Kane Chronicles and later, even Magnus Chase books, then we might get a more faithful adaptation of Riordan's beloved universe.
