Happy Endings star Eliza Coupe's voice character, Katherine, is at the heart of Haunted Hotel. Katherine is a single mother whose brother Nathan's recent demise passed down a haunted inheritance to her, a hotel named Undervale, where supernatural spirits co-exist with worldly beings. Katherine's world revolves around her two kids, Ben (Skyler Gisondo) and Esther( Natalie Palamides), and her dead brother's spirit still communicates with her.

However, life is not easy for Katherine and her children as Undervale is haunted by ghosts, but the former is not ready to give up on her family business so easily. On the other hand, Esther and Ben take an interest in supernatural existence, two smart, curious kids who only want to learn about the world of the unseen.

Katherine does consider exorcism to keep the demons in control, but suffers from a dilemma, as it would also mean parting ways with her dead sibling's spirit. However, the exorcism does not go as planned, and supernatural existence once again returns to Undervale.

Amidst all the fiasco, a new face is introduced in Haunted Hotel, a demon named Abaddon (portrayed by Jimmi Simpson), who eventually befriends Ben and his dead uncle Nathan. Ben also develops romantic feelings for a female spirit, Annabelle, and the two eventually acknowledge their weird relationship.

While the plot unravels on a bittersweet note, the humans are seen developing a connection with the good spirit Abaddon. He saves Ben and Nathan from an ambush by evil spirits while roaming in the adjoining woods and wins their trust. Katherine (who was initially inclined towards exorcism) also starts to develop a bond with Abaddon.

She takes care of the good spirit when the latter starts suffering from violent outbursts and anger issues. It all culminates when a dead deer is discovered on the porch of Undervale, and the family realizes that the hotel is under attack. However, with the help of Katherine, Abaddon manages to keep his condition under control and, in turn, saves the family when the "Haunted Hotel" gets ambushed by soul demons.

Haunted Hotel's honeymoon suite almost leaves Katherine's life at risk, but little did she see the danger coming her way. The room leaves things (like a box of chocolates) behind for Katherine, trying to communicate with her in the most enigmatic way, but she manages to find her way before the spirits can do her any more harm.

But trouble further builds up as Ben gets afflicted by a mental ailment, leading to a serious crisis for the family. He starts to live in seven different forms of himself (seven types of human emotions), and Katherine struggles to get her son back to normalcy.

On the other hand, Esther suffers from a sad emptiness in her life brought by her father's absence. She tries to find the missing piece of the puzzle using supernatural methods, but it eventually leads to a heartbreaking revelation: Esther and Ben's father had killed himself years ago.

The red-cloaked entities arrive at the "Haunted Hotel" and the identity of Abaddon is revealed

Who actually is Abaddon? The identity of the good demon remains a secret till the end of Haunted Hotel, until the red-cloaked entities arrive and claim themselves to be a cult group going by the name The Acolytes of Abaddon, led by a man called Todd. Shocked by the name, Katherine and her family eventually learn that Abaddon is some kind of "Lord" to the group, and they have been looking for him.

Abaddon is also hailed as the king by the mysterious red-cloaked group, and they have come to take their lord back home to make a prophecy come true. While all of it remains unclear, Todd tells Katherine and the others that they need to perform a certain ritual, and with Abaddon being excited to finally find a way back home, preparations start.

Abaddon gets dressed up with his followers chanting the name demon God. Katherine looks worried that it might leave Abaddon in trouble, and as the ritual begins, the group leader, Todd, sacrifices his own life, and it starts an unprecedented apocalypse: hell comes down to the world of the living. On the other hand, as the ritual starts, Abaddon gets lifted off the ground, and the sinister motive of the Acolytes is revealed.

The apocalypse

The main purpose of the ritual was to start the apocalypse and restore Abaddon's lost powers, and Todd's sacrifice was the only way to initiate the whole thing. The moment the Acolytes succeed in completing the demonic act, hell breaks loose on the human world.

Meteor shower embraces the earth in its deadly wrap, and the ground breaks apart, opening up large pits of boiling lava. Abaddon makes use of his restored powers to fly from one place to another, but he is alone, not enough to save Katherine and her family, and they meet their fate after a tragic accident.

Shattered by the loss of the people who have only given him love and support during hard times, Abaddon uses a mysterious relic to travel back to the past and find a way to stop the demonic cult that led to the apocalypse - more importantly, he needs to prevent Todd from sacrificing himself. After multiple attempts at time-travel, Abaddon finds a way to break the deadly loop.

He goes back to the moment when the red-cloaked cult group first appeared at the "Haunted Hotel" and attacks the group leader, Todd, and his followers, forcing them to leave Katherine and her family. He is thus able to prevent the apocalypse, but he also realizes that his powers will not be restored until the ritual starts.

But is there a way for him to get his superpowers back without the apocalypse happening? Here's where the young, bright mind of Esther (who is curious to learn about supernatural elements) comes in, and she might help Abaddon figure out a way. But Abaddon places power over love, and his bold decision to save the human world ends Haunted Hotel on a rather emotional note.
