Creature Commandos and Harley Quinn voice actor Alan Tudyk recently appeared in a Collider interview in which the actor was all praise for James Gunn. While some may feel that Tudyk is biased in favor of his boss, it should be noted that several other people who have worked with the current DC Studios co-CEO have nothing but good things to say.

In this interview, Tudyk was asked about how many lines were improvised in the animated DCU series that streamed on HBO Max (formerly Max) between December 5, 2024, and January 9, 2025. To this question, the actor who voices Doctor Phosphorus in Creature Commandos responded:

"I would say most of it is the script. James Gunn, it's tough to improve upon what he brings. There's some stuff. I don't remember exactly what it was... It's just very little [improvisation], because he does such a good job."

Explaining the Creature Commandos voice actor's comments

It means that, unlike the usual Hollywood system, which involves scripts being written and rewritten as the film is being shot, James Gunn ensures that the film has a completed script before the cameras start rolling on the project. Tudyk alluded to this when he said there was very little room for improvisation in the Creature Commandos script.

We also know that after taking over as the co-CEO of DC Studios, Gunn has been open about the fact that, unlike the rival studios, they will not go ahead and begin shooting a project, no matter how big the project is. The camera will start rolling only after the script is complete. This is why the DCU Batman movie, The Brave and the Bold, hasn't begun shooting.

Tudyk's words also make fans hopeful that the second season of the animated series will be as phenomenal as the first season.

The acclaimed DCU animated show was renewed for a second season in December 2024, even before the conclusion of the first season

As mentioned before, just a few days after the animated show streamed its fourth episode, "Chasing Squirrels," Creature Commandos was renewed for a second season on December 23, 2024. At that point, three episodes of the series were still left to be released, meaning that the studio felt comfortable enough to renew it. HBO & Max comedy programming head Amy Gravitt said this while renewing the show:

“Only James Gunn could have conjured this wild band of misfit monsters who tug at your heart and force you to root passionately for them. We couldn’t be more delighted to continue their stories with James, Dean Lorey, Peter Safran and our fantastic partners at DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation.”

James Gunn and Peter Safran released this statement in response to the series renewal:

“We’re thrilled to team up with Max for another season of ‘Creature Commandos’ mayhem. From our spectacular first season of ‘Peacemaker’ to the astonishing run of ‘The Penguin’ to the record-breaking launch of ‘Creature Commandos,’ Max has consistently delivered above industry expectations and beyond our wildest imaginings.”
