Apple TV's Palm Royale thrives on its bizarre plot, and this time it's about Josh Lucas's Douglas and Kristen Wiig's Maxine.

Episode 7 of Palm Royale Season 2, titled Maxine Plays Dead, picks up right from where it left off, with a dead body floating in the pool.

The episode begins with a dramatic sequence, as the newspaper's headlines declare that Maxine Delacorte is Dead. Everybody thought that the body found in the pool belonged to Maxine. But in reality, she's alive, and when she blows the cover during the funeral, it leaves her ex-husband heartbroken. In a candid chat with Variety, Josh Lucas, who plays Douglas, says,

"He's untethered, he's lost, and he's terrified. He's in such pain. He's just devastated...And then you think, is it because he loves her so much or is it because he's totally a narcissist?"

Palm Royale Season 2 Episode 7: How does Douglas react when he finds out that Maxine is alive?

What happens in this episode is absolutely chaotic; her friends Evelyn, Dinah, and Ann clarify at the morgue that the dead woman isn't Maxine. And honestly, Maxine is alive. Back at the hotel, she's chilling in a hot tub with the guests.

Meanwhile, Douglas is heartbroken after finding out his ex-wife (Maxine) is dead. Perry gives Douglas Maxine's ashes, and as the funeral begins at the church, Mary opens the casket only to find Maxine inside. Douglas rushes to her and tells her that he loves him. They even sing Maxine's favorite song. When they carry her casket outside, they see a veiled person proceeding towards the casket. Thinking ti to be Norma, Virginia asks her team to alert, and Maxine blows her cover, but when the figure removes the veil, we see it's Bruce. People start leaving the church, Mary tried to explain, and Douglas, with a disappointed frown, says,

"You would've let me believe that you were dead. Just let me live my life in peace."

In the evening, Douglas meets Maxine by the pool. He tells her that Virginia has told him about the plan. He then hands over Mirabelle's ashes to her in an urn, and Maxine gets emotional as she says,

"This is so sweet. Thanks for bringing me Mirabelle. It's very graceful of you considering the circumstances."

She then empties the ashes in the hot tub and assures him that it's the best thing she could do. Douglas reveals that he's going to Switzerland, and he wants her to come with him to sign away her claim on the baby trust. Maxine asks whether Douglas meant whatever he said at the funeral about his feelings for her, and they share a passionate kiss. Maxine agrees to go to Switzerland with him.

Palm Royale: Josh Lucas on Douglas' love for Maxine

Douglas and Maxine might be separated, but it seems like they do care about each other. Douglas was heartbroken when he found out that Maxine was dead, and was left equally disappointed and hurt when he learnt that it was a set-up. He felt like she played with his emotions. Maxine urged Virginia to share their plan of the ruse, but she chose to avoid her plea. Standing in the casket, she watches Douglas walk off. But they do get together by the end of the episode.

Speaking to Variety, Lucas reveals that Douglas truly fell in love with Maxine,

"I think when he met Maxine, he truly fell in love. My sense of him is that he actually did have integrity in it, particularly in his mind that he was loyal and faithful, and he took great pride in that because he was flying all over the world." He's a Labrador puppy, who is having the best time destroying the house but then realizes Oh my God, I destroyed the house."
