DC Studios closed the San Diego Comic-Con with a bang with the Peacemaker Season 2 panel. A new trailer was also released during the panel, in which we learn that the concept of the multiverse, a divisive trend in superhero films today, will play a role in the upcoming season. James Gunn spoke about the role of the multiverse in the forthcoming season.

In the panel, James Gunn revealed that despite his best attempts, John Cena's Christopher Smith is still regarded as a joke in Peacemaker Season 2. Moreover, he still has feelings for Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), who still rejects him, and hard on his tail is Rick Flag Sr., the A.R.G.U.S. director, Rick Flag Jr.'s father, whom he killed in 2021's The Suicide Squad. James Gunn teased this in the panel:

"Peacemaker is a different guy this year, he is dealing with the demons he sort of unocvered from the first season, and trying to deal with them. And the world is not accepting him the way he is. They aren't accepting him as a hero. He is in love with Emilia Harcourt, she isn't accepting him. So, he is not getting anything he wants, and he discovers a parallel dimension through the QUC, the Quantum Unfolding Chamber, and he thinks its the perfect universe, and that is the begining of the story, and kind of goes from there."

What do James Gunn's comments mean for Peacemaker Season 2?

It looks like Peacemaker Season 2 will see John Cena's Christopher Smith/Peacemaker stealing the life of his multiversal counterpoint. After doing so, Chris discovers that his counterpart has everything he ever wished for, including a loving and supportive father and Emilia Harcourt's love. Thus, it means that Chris is tempted to steal a life to escape his problems.

And, as Chris does so, it is up to the rest of The 11th Street Kids to bring him back to the universe he originated from. James Gunn teased this about Peacemaker Season 2 in a May 2025 interview with Entertainment Weekly:

"We come into season 2 with Peacemaker knowing that he saved the world from the Butterflies. He thinks he's a big star now, and he should be a real superhero. And we see at the very beginning of episode 1 that he's meeting with the group of superheroes from Superman, and he's basically interviewing for membership in the group. But they just mock him the entire time, so he's not taken seriously."

He continued:

"He's still considered a punchline among all of the other metahumans, so he's starting the season in a bad place. As are all of our heroes, all of the 11th Street kids — well, everybody but Vigilante [Freddie Stroma], who just always seems to be okay with everything."

What is the upcoming season of Peacemaker about?

It seems that early in Peacemaker Season 2, Chris tries to audition for the Justice Gang, but it seems that he is rejected. Moreover, it also looks like people don't take him or the 11th Street Kids seriously, despite saving the world from Operation Butterfly. The synopsis for the second season reads:

"In season 2, Peacemaker discovers an alternate world where life is everything he wishes it could be. But this discovery also forces him to face his traumatic past and take the future into his own hands."

Peacemaker Season 2 begins streaming on HBO Max from August 21, 2025.
