According to Her Last Broadcast: The Abduction of Jodi Huisentruit, before Huisentruit's abduction (in June 1995), she was concerned about her well-being and safety.

In October 1994, about nine months before her disappearance, Jodi felt that an unknown suspect was keeping tabs on her and following her around in a white pickup. She had also started taking self-defense classes in fear for her life. On the day of her disappearance, two of her friends also remembered that Jodi was thinking about changing her mobile phone number because of safety reasons.

Her Last Broadcast: The Abduction of Jodi Huisentruit features the events on the fateful day of June 27, 1995, when Jodi failed to show up at KIMT for her regular morning show. Even when one of her producers gave her a wake-up call at 4 am, she did not show up for the program by 6 am and a colleague had to fill in for her.

This uncommon behaviour on her part created suspicion among Jodi's colleagues, following which they alerted the police. While the police found no traces of Jodi at her home, they suspected that an altercation had taken place after they found her car keys on the ground.

The police believed that somebody had abducted Jodi while she was trying to get in her car, also evident by the spread of her personal belongings (earrings, high heels, blow dryer and hair spray) on the ground, including a partial palm print on the car's window.

While the police initially suspected that Jodi had disappeared, the palm print and other evidence suggested that she could have been abducted, as a Mason City Police Department officer said on Her Last Broadcast: The Abduction of Jodi Huisentruit:

“Things went from we’re just looking for somebody missing to we’re looking for somebody that was abducted.''

While the Mason Police Department had many leads on Jodi's case over the years, none of them were strong enough to catch her abductor/killer. After years of search, Jodi was announced legally dead in 2001.

One of the most noteworthy leads found by the police was one of Jodi's friends, John Vansice. She met with him the night before her abduction. John complied with the police and submitted his DNA and palm print samples, but was eventually ruled out as a suspect. He maintained his innocence till the day of his death in December 2024.

June 2025 marked the 30th anniversary of Jodi's abduction and even after decades since her disappearance, the Mason City police and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation are still looking for active leads on her case.
