The series follows Abigail as she teams up with the French Prime Minister, who also finds herself in the midst of a blackmail scheme that eventually turns out to be related to the kidnapping of Anderson.
The finale episode was quite riveting and had fans on the edge of their seats as the mastermind behind Alex Anderson's kidnapping was finally revealed.
The culprits behind the kidnapping of Alex Anderson in Hostage have connections to both the British and French Prime Ministers
In Hostage, Alex Anderson is kidnapped in French Guiana, where he is working with Doctors Without Borders. The kidnapper's demand is simple: he wants Abigail to step down as Prime Minister. However, Abigail is reluctant to give in to these demands, which causes a strain in her relationship with her daughter as well.
On the other hand, the French Prime Minister, Vivienne, gets involved in the case when she is visiting London amidst her re-election campaign. She is facing blackmail, where the blackmailer threatens to expose her fling with her stepson, Matheo.
In the face of these issues, both Prime Ministers join hands to figure out the masterminds behind the kidnapping and the blackmail. Ultimately, they get the answer they are looking for at the season finale, when it is revealed that the masterminds behind the kidnapping and the blackmail are former military personnel who were in the British Armed Forces.
While Abigail is being threatened by former military sergeant John Shagan due to issues the two had faced in the past, Vivienne is being threatened by Shagan's associate in the military, Saskia Morgan, who has been in a relationship with Matheo for espionage.
However, although Alex is retrieved safely from his abduction by the end of the season, it unravels a much bigger problem. Shagan and Morgan are not working alone and are associated with much higher military officials, who also share the same sentiment - that Abigail should be removed as Prime Minister. The reason behind their dissatisfaction with the British Prime Minister is related to some gutting decisions she took back in time, when she was serving as a junior minister.
Season 1 of Hostage is available to stream on Netflix, and fans are already awaiting the arrival of a second season for the political thriller.
