Only Murders in the Building is rolling back in for Season 5 on September 9, 2025. The series will launch with 3 episodes simultaneously, followed by weekly drops.
This Hulu hit has its own magic: critics rave about it, cameos shine with star power, and the trio of Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez brings irresistible chemistry. While a final season hasn’t been set, ever since the renewal was announced last September, fan theories and speculations have only multiplied.
However, the cast and crew are pledging to continue “as long as we felt the quality was [there].”
Meanwhile, Only Murders in the Building has not just garnered a wave of critical reception over the past couple of years; it has also established a near-cult following, who are desperate to know what this show is about in the end.
Is Arconia still full of mysteries, or is the audience on the brink of the curtain call? To answer that, one needs to refer to the very recent remarks of the cast themselves, as they reveal more about their commitment to the project.
How many more seasons will Only Murders in the Building have?
In a question-and-answer interview with Entertainment Tonight, series star and co-creator Steve Martin was blunt about the possible duration of Only Murders in the Building:
“We do not know. We get asked, ‘How long do you guys want to do this?’ And I just go, ‘Well, you tell us?'... We like doing it, and it’s a wonderful job for us. We couldn’t say, ‘Well, let’s just do something else,’ and it be a situation that’s not as fun…”
His co-star Martin Short also shared that view, citing how uncommon it is that a TV series can be both a critical and a popular success.
“Hits are so rare, they’re such flukes when all of the stars line up, and I think this is one of them. But we would do it as long as we felt the quality was [there].”
He pointed out how pleasant the working environment is and how happy the cast is on set, which is a serious consideration in their willingness to stay.
Selena Gomez, on the other hand, has responded to the questions on the future of the show with her signature level of frankness. Speaking with Variety last year, Gomez stated:
“I honestly don’t know what the future holds. Every season, we put everything into the show as if it’s our last. I’m really happy with how it’s blossomed and am content right now. But again, who knows? Let’s see what happens.”
In September 2024, showrunner John Hoffman confirmed that the writers were already working on Season 5, indicating Hulu believed it could continue the story.
As of now, there’s no official end in sight and no final season announced. Both the cast and creators have stressed that as long as fresh mysteries keep emerging and the creative energy stays strong, Only Murders in the Building has the potential to continue for several more seasons.
In other words, the writers and the passionate crew behind the scenes (rather than a predetermined show bible or ratings cliff) get to decide when the last curtain drops.
What is Only Murders in the Building about?

To the uninitiated, Only Murders in the Building is a murder-mystery featuring Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez). They all shack up in a swanky fictional Manhattan building called the Arconia.
The story starts when somebody dies (or gets murdered) right under their noses. Instead of minding their own business, these three true-crime junkies decide to make a podcast about this, documenting their amateur inquiries. What started as an ingenious genre parody has evolved into a reflection on friendship, fame, and reinvention.
The first season was released in August 2021 and received universal praise, with critics on Rotten Tomatoes describing it as:
“...silly approach to true crime obsessives is at once hilarious and insightful, thanks in large part to its extremely charming central trio.”.
The later seasons never lost their spark; in fact, they raised the stakes by weaving the characters into fresh storylines and even relocating some of the action to Los Angeles. Along the way, the series welcomed high-profile guest stars, including Meryl Streep, Eugene Levy, and others. Now, as season five prepares to premiere on September 9, 2025, Only Murders in the Building boasts an impressive 7 Emmy wins from 49 nominations.
Also, the cast snagged the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series at the 2025 SAG Awards.
That track record, combined with consistently high ratings, made its debut the most-watched comedy premiere in Hulu history. It has made Only Murders in the Building one of the foundational series of the streaming giant, and one of the few examples of non-IP-based original series to survive in an era of franchises and reboots.
