HBO’s Harry Potter remake brings a subtle yet exciting wardrobe upgrade to Hogwarts. While how this change will be received by the viewers remains unknown, it could prove to be a smart business move for Warner Bros.

Some earlier photos from the shooting set captured students wearing an identical robe to the original films. However, a later set of photos suggested a subtle change. Hogwarts students, including Lox Pratt (Draco Malfoy), Alastair Stout (Ron Weasley), Rory Wilmot (Neville Longbottom), and McLaughlin, may not be seen in the familiar all-black look.

Fans are theorising that the costume department may have taken some creative liberty this time. The latest batch of on-set shots shows McLaughlin alongside Pratt, Stout, and Wilmot. This time, the group is seen wearing robes that lean towards a deeper burgundy shade instead of the deep black used in the movies.

The inside lining of the hoods reportedly features a greenish plaid pattern, a small but distinct departure from the franchise’s long-standing style. When J.K. Rowling first published the novels, much of the work for visualization was left to the readers.

The entire world of Hogwarts and the appearance of the key characters were conceived by the author and brought to life by the readers. Then came the movies, in which different characters wore distinct attire. As characters matured, so did their wardrobes. However, with the new HBO series, viewers may expect a fresh take.

Detailed look at the old costumes

Even though the series is reportedly adding changes to wizarding costumes, this is not the first time that Harry Potter attire has evolved. Significantly, between 2001 and 2011, the attire styles had changed.

The change was necessary to mirror the tone and maturity of the story. In the early entries of the eight-part series, costume designer Judianna Makovsky ideated the black robes layered over gray sweaters.

The fond memories of the white shirts and house-colored ties are etched into every Harry Potter movie fan's life. Initial film costumes were plain, often oversized, but formal, capturing the innocence and wonder of the first two films.

Combined with characteristic features (like Hermione's curly hair, Harry's glasses, and Malfoy's silver hair), we got the essence of Hogwarts through the costumes. Hogwarts to us was both a very familiar boarding school and a fantasy world, nowhere to be seen in real life.
