Star Wars Rebels may have been released years before Andor, but one specific episode from its third season unexpectedly feels shockingly in sync with Andor Episode 9, “Welcome to the Rebellion.”
The unexpected crossover in quality, tone, theme, and storytelling validates that even animation from 2017 was laying the foundation for one of the most politically thrilling and emotionally significant arcs in the Star Wars universe.
The Star Wars Rebels episode that first chronicled Mon Mothma’s rebellion
Long before Andor made the headlines with Mon Mothma’s inspiring Senate speech, Star Wars Rebels had previously already put out a foretaste of this dire turning point in Episode 18 of Season 3; “Secret Cargo.”
The Star Wars Rebels story picks up just after the very moment Andor ends: Mon Mothma, having condemned the Empire in a live on-air Senate session, escapes Coruscant with the help of the Ghost crew.
This episode of Star Wars not only re-establishes characters important to the animated series—like Hera Syndulla and Ezra Bridger—but also continues the very getaway that Andor now puts in motion.
In the Star Wars Rebels episode, Grand Admiral Thrawn’s crew strike Mon’s transportation, forcing her to bolt onboard the Ghost. What comes out of this is not only a thrilling chase but also a moment of intense political precision.
After surviving the Empire’s hunt, Mon Mothma speeches the galaxy in a broadcast that strengthens her role in history. Her speech ends with:
“We will not rest until we bring an end to the Empire, until we restore our Republic. Are you with me?”
That line isn’t just influential —it bonds the divided Rebel factions; a storyline that Star Wars Rebels captured years before Andor visually sensationalized her decision.
Andor Episode 9 is a reckoning for Mon Mothma—and for viewers
While Star Wars Rebels brought us the aftermath, Andor showed us the actual breaking point. In Episode 9, Mon Mothma is required to act in after the Ghorman Massacre, an annihilating event entrenched in deep Star Wars lore.
Genevieve O’Reilly, reprising her role as Mon Mothma, puts on an intense address to the Senate, criticising the regime’s lies. She doesn’t just counter the Empire—she names it. With rage, she says:
“The death of truth is the ultimate victory of evil.”
Star Wars Rebels may have captured her stand in public. But Andor gave us the extremely personal toll it took on her— disloyalty, terror, and sacrifice.
Her assistant, Erskin Semaj, who turns out to be a spy, although associated with Luthen Rael. And in the web of mystery, Mon must now pick up and choose: follow Bail Organa’s negotiated escape plan or place all of her trust in Cassian. Ultimately, she picks up and decides to choose her very own voice.
The Empire may lister to the words coming out of her mouth—but the Rebellion? They hear her the amount of conviction coming out of her.
By the time Andor reaches Episode 9, Mon is no longer a backdrop tactician. She's the movement’s moral road, and Star Wars Rebels attests she’s also its force.
The storyline ties between Rebels and Andor expose an extremely rare continuity in the way the story unfolds. One animated episode turned out to be the sequel to a new aged drama, tying together years and years of lore.
Through both series, Mon Mothma comes off not just as a senate member in exile, but she’s the heart of the very rebellion—and that accomplishment lands with extreme force when both stories are taken into consideration.
