It's been six years since we bid farewell to the science nerd group in The Big Bang Theory, who got their happy endings in the season finale after 12 long years.
While the show gave befitting conclusions to each character, Sheldon, Leonard, and even Howard, it did not do justice to Raj. He not only had no character development in the show but also ended up lonely in the series finale.
While Sheldon became the breakthrough character, going on to even have his prequel series, Young Sheldon, Leonard had a fulfilling romance with the show's female lead, Penny. Both Sheldon and Leonard can be regarded as the show's main characters and it would have made sense if they started out that way.
But The Big Bang Theory started out as a gang of four nerd friends who tried to adjust to the outside world, and interact with women with the help of their next-door neighbor, Penny.
Howard, the nerdy creep who always used to hit on women, even found a loving family in Bernadette. Raj had none.
More on Raj's fate in The Big Bang Theory in our story.
Raj was often excluded and made fun of in The Big Bang Theory
While every character had one or the other differentiating trait in The Big Bang Theory, in addition to being big-time nerds, Raj had none. In the initial episodes, he is actually seen as Howard's plus-one, who were both envisioned as the comedic relief duo.
With Sheldon, Leonard and even Howard having their individual storylines, Raj was often excluded from the group. While Sheldon and Leonard eventually became The Big Bang Theory's main characters, Howard met Bernadette and there were storylines centred on his career advancements, too.
Raj, however, had none. Not only did he not have any individual storyline except from the main group, but the one defining quality he had was the butt of all jokes. Raj had some feminine qualities, as he enjoyed Penny's ladies' night and watching girly shows like Sex and the City. His peculiar feminine interests not only excluded him from the guys' group, but also made him an object of their jokes on various occasions.
Another peculiar trait that eventually became Raj's identity in The Big Bang Theory was his selective inability to speak around females, except family members. While this started as a joke, it soon spiralled out of control and became his defining trait, which was derogatory and repetitive.
He was often the laughing stock, who had to take the fall on behalf of the whole group. When the whole gang dressed up as characters of the Justice League, he was stuck with being Aquaman. The group often insulted him when he wanted to approach a girl romantically, which further negatively affected his confidence.
I think Raj did not get his happy ending in The Big Bang Theory finale
All the incidental stories, however insulting they were, were largely employed for humor. One would expect he would finally get a happy ending in The Big Bang Theory finale. I think he did not, and looking at other characters' development through the years, the show did him dirty even in the finale.
Sheldon married Amy and won the Nobel Prize and Leonard married Penny and they were about to have a baby in the season finale. Howard, the nerd who started as a creep hitting on women on every occasion, even found his happy ending with Bernadette and their children.
While Raj considered settling down with Anu in London, the girl his parents found for him, he realized that he wanted to be with his friends. Despite the realization, he ended up in a small apartment while his friends had fulfilling relationships and families.
In addition to having no romantic storyline, Raj did not even get a breakthrough or career progression, and the finale did not address his character development because there was none. He started as a lonely, underconfident man and while he regained some confidence throughout the seasons, he remained lonely even in the finale.
