I firmly believe Tuvok could never match Janeway as a Captain, and this one moment in Star Trek: Voyager proves it

James T. Kirk and Jean-Luc Picard might be the most celebrated Star Trek captains, but Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) created history by being the series' first female captain.

While Janeway found some difficulty in establishing her chain of command, she led her crew through all seven seasons of Star Trek: Voyager.

Many fans had doubts about Janeway and often believed Lt. Tuvok might be a better fit to replace her as Voyager's captain. The half-Vulcan was the ship's second officer, Chief of Security, and Chief Tactical Officer, and was highly skilled at his job.

However, one episode in Star Trek: Voyager made me realise that the captain's position was more than just a rank, and Tuvok's highly logical mind was not best suited for the position.

More on this in our story.

I think this Star Trek: Voyager Season 2 episode proves that Tuvok was no match for Janeway as a Captain

While Kathryn Janeway has time and again proved her expertise in leading her titular starship, fans still had their doubts about her leadership capabilities.

In fact, many fans also believe that Lt. Tuvok, the half-Vulcan, was a better fit to command the ship instead of Janeway. While I see the appeal, considering the logic and reasoning of the half-Vulcan, Star Trek: Voyager Season 2 Episode 25 'Resolutions' secretly showed that Voyager was better under Janeway's control.

When the USS Voyager was forcefully brought to the Delta Quadrant, it resulted in many crew deaths, including Lt. Commander Cavit.

In Resolutions, both Janeway and her ex-Maquis First Officer Commander Chakotay are stranded on an alien land and cannot leave its surface without dying.

After Janeway commands that she and her first officer should be left stranded and Voyager continue its journey home, Tuvok is naturally elevated to the starship's unannounced Captain, aided by Cavit's death.

While Tuvok was a highly skilled and professional being, cracks soon began to show in his leadership style, and his cold and logical nature was often in contrast with Voyager's emotional crew.

Seeing their captain and First Officer stranded in Star Trek: Voyager's Resolutions, they requested their new captain to consider a dangerous alternative to save them.

However, Tuvok's logical side took over, and he believed saving Janeway and Chakotay was too risky. He remained adamant that Voyager should continue its journey to the Alpha Quadrant.

However, when he did decide to steer the starship's path and save the stranded captain, it was too late, and their vessel was already on the edge of a mutiny.

While I do not question Tuvok's skills as a captain, Resolutions clearly established that the half-Vulcan was not equipped to lead the Voyager crew, simply because he was too practical and logical, clashing with their emotional side.

I think Janeway was the best captain for her ship in Star Trek: Voyager

Resolutions made me appreciate Janeway even more. While I have nothing against Tuvok and believe that he could have proven a better First Officer to Janeway, he was simply not fit to lead the Voyager.

Janeway, albeit resolute, accommodated her crew's emotional side and, like Captain James Kirk, often gave leeway to her team.

While Resolutions is one example where, without any second thought, she was ready to sacrifice herself for the overall well-being of her crew, there are multiple instances like this.

While I do feel that there were moments when Janeway felt too burdened by the responsibility on her shoulders, she managed it sincerely and with an utmost sense of duty. I appreciated her as a Star Trek captain, and she should be equally celebrated like Kirk and Picard.
