I just realised Paris Hilton's Supernatural cameo was a meta joke about this failed classic film reboot

The CW's Supernatural's monster of the week theme allowed the show to have frequent guest appearances and fun Easter eggs.

The Winchester brothers' (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) regular hunting in season 5 introduced them to a forest god, Leshi, who could transform into any person, a perfect opportunity for the show to sneak in a fun cameo by Paris Hilton.

While Hilton's cameo was a surprise, I just realised it was also a meta-joke about her failed slasher film House of Wax, which was released in 2009. The movie was a remake of a classic horror film, but unfortunately, it failed at the box office.

But the movie's failed success did not stop Supernatural from having a fun nod to the film, in which Jared Padalecki (Sam) himself co-starred with Hilton.

More on Supernatural's meta-joke with Hilton's cameo in our story.

I just realised how Supernatural sneaked in a meta joke with Paris Hilton's cameo in Season 5

What makes Supernatural charming and enjoyable for its fans even after so many years is its ability to link the show's events with pop culture. The show often has hidden easter eggs and references to pop culture, which are fun for the audience to decode.

The show had one such easter egg as a sneaked-in meta-joke when Paris Hilton appeared in one of the episodes in season 5. Hilton had a cameo in Supernatural Season 5 Episode 5, 'Fallen Idols,' where Dean and Sam's monster of the week was an Eastern European forest god named Leshi.

Leshi could take different forms and, throughout the episode, transform into Mahatma Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, and Paris Hilton. Leshi's guise as Hilton allowed the show to feature Paris Hilton in a fun cameo and silently nod to one of her slasher films.

Coincidentally, Padalecki co-starred with Hilton in the 2005 failed slasher film House of Wax. During their hunting, when Leshi (disguised as Hilton) was about to attack Sam and Dean, Dean notes that he has never seen House of Wax. At that moment, Sam gives a funny look to his brother (silently acknowledging his casting in the film).

While the movie did not do well at the box office, this did not stop Hilton and Padalecki from acknowledging their casting in the slasher film and making a fun meta-joke.

House of Wax, director Jaume Collet-Serra's debut film, was a remake of the 1953 horror film of the same name. Alongside Hilton and Padalecki, it also starred Chad Michael Murray, Elisha Cuthbert, Brian Van Holt, and Damon Herriman.

Keeping up with his brother Sam, Ackles also starred in a 2009 reboot of a popular slasher film called My Bloody Valentine 3D. While the movie was again a miss at the box office, Supernatural had a silent nod to Ackles' failed slasher, too.

Supernatural Season 5 Episode 14, a Valentine's Day-themed episode, was titled 'My Bloody Valentine', a silent nod to Ackles' 2009 film, a remake of a Canadian movie of the same name.

These pop culture references and meta jokes, sprinkled throughout the show, added to its richness and eased tensions even during intense moments.
