Doctor Who Season 2 or series 15 wrapped up on May 31, 2025, with a regeneration of the Doctor. In the season, Ncuti Gatwa played the character of the Fifteenth Doctor, and at the finale of the season, he regenerated into Rose Tyler, played by Billie Piper, who was the companion to two of the Doctors played by David Tennant and Christopher Eccleston.
Besides that, another surprise character appeared in the finale when the Thirteenth Doctor popped up on the screen. The Thirteenth Doctor was played by Jodie Whittaker in Series 11 of Doctor Who. In a recent interview with The Times U.K., Whittaker shared that she is open to returning to the popular sci-fi series. She said:
"If someone said to me in 20 years, ‘I’ve written an episode and the Thirteenth comes back,’ I just wouldn’t hesitate. It’s absolute joy."

Doctor Who: Jodie Whittaker is open to reprising her role in the sci-fi series
Jodie Whittaker joined the popular British sci-fi series in 2018 when she appeared as the Thirteenth Doctor in Series 11. She portrayed the character for three seasons and also appeared in specials and as a guest star in the finale of the 2025 series.
In The Times U.K. interview, Whittaker shared how excited she was to be back as the Thirteenth Doctor and also joked about still fitting in her old costume. To add to her previous comment, she said:
"I was just delighted I still fitted in my costume. The second I got to Cardiff [the series’ central filming location], I felt like I was home, even though it’s a different studio, a different Tardis. It’s just my absolute happiness, Doctor Who."
Whittaker is the first female Doctor in the series and also talked about the "wonderful moment" when she was cast as the Thirteenth Doctor. She said:
"There needed to be a first and I didn’t fully appreciate it. I’m not like Jack Lemmon in Some Like It Hot: ‘I’m a girl, I’m a girl!’ I just am. But once it was announced - as well as a few grumpy pumps - for a lot of people it felt like a really wonderful moment."
As per Deadline, Doctor Who's return has been in question for months due to low ratings for the previous seasons. However, BBC’s chief content officer, Kate Phillips, shared that BBC was committed to the show, even if Disney decided to back out of it.
Whittaker is currently voicing her character in the audio series, Doctor Who: The Thirteenth Doctor Adventures, with Mandeep Gill, who voices Yaz, the companion of Whittaker's Doctor. For the show, she shared that she will always be the Thirteenth Doctor, even when she is 90 years old, as she loves playing the character. She said:
"You don’t ever really leave it. I can be with Mandip all day, every day and not learn my lines. I’ve never been happier. I’ll do that for ever - I’ll be Doctor 13 into my nineties."
