On July 9, 2025, Building the Band debuted on Netflix, introducing viewers to a group of vocalists who must create new musical groups without ever meeting. The 26-year-old actor and former boy band member, Chance Perez, was one of the most talked-about competitors in the premiere.

Perez, who is best known for portraying Javi Garcia, the Black Ranger, in Power Rangers Dino Fury and Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, entered the competition with both high expectations and prior expertise.

“I loved being in a band with other people who have the same passion as I do,” he said during his introductory segment. “That’s something that I really want to be a part of again, so that’s why I’m here.”

Unfortunately, despite his desire to return to band life, Perez was among the first contestants to be eliminated from Building the Band. His performance didn’t resonate with his fellow singers.

Chance Perez’s elimination on Building the Band and more about his past

Chance Perez sang Shawn Mendes’ 2017 hit “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” as his audition song during the first episode of Building the Band. According to the show’s rules, for him to advance, at least five other competitors had to express interest in joining him in a band. But Perez only received three approvals, so he was forced to withdraw from the tournament.

Perez talked about his past as a member of two boy bands, including In Real Life. The group was created on the 2017 season of the ABC series Boy Band, before his performance. After putting out a number of singles, In Real Life broke up in 2020.

Even though he played a significant part in the Power Rangers franchise, Perez did not discuss his acting experience on the show. His audition, though filled with energy, drew concern from fellow contestants inside their cubicles.

“He’s slipping off pitch a little bit, but I like his tone,” one singer observed.

Another participant remarked, “I’m not hearing a lot of control,” while a third commented, “I didn’t really hear a confident singer.” When asked by host AJ McLean to evaluate his own performance, Perez responded with honesty:

“I felt like I was screaming the notes instead of singing them.”

McLean then delivered the result:

“I’m so sorry buddy, but you only got three likes. That’s not enough to carry you on in the competition. I am so, so sorry. Chance, I’m afraid it’s your time to go home.”

Perez became emotional during his exit interview, wiping away tears as he admitted that the performance didn’t reflect his true vocal ability. He shared how difficult the moment was, expressing his deep desire to pursue music long-term, even though things didn’t go as he’d hoped.

After he left, the rest of the contestants were shown a photo of Chance. “I had Chance in my likes!” one contestant revealed. Another added,

“I could see him in a boy band, you know? He’s got the look!”

Building the Band, hosted by AJ McLean of Backstreet Boys fame, uses a unique format in which singers perform from individual cubicles without visual contact. They base their decisions to collaborate solely on what they hear. The goal is to form fully compatible musical groups based on sound and vibe alone.

New episodes of Building the Band are released every Wednesday on Netflix.
