After seven seasons, NCIS: New Orleans ended on May 23, 2021. Created by Gary Glasberg, this Scott Bakula and Rob Kerkovich-starring series is the third installment of the popular NCIS franchise. It delves into the lives of SSA Dwayne Cassius Pride (Scott Bakula) and his team, based in New Orleans, Louisiana. As a part of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, they solve crimes related to the US Navy and Marine Corps.

Ahead of the series finale, in a 2021 interview with TV Insider, Scott Bakula, who played the lead of the police procedural series, opened up about its ending. He told,

"This being the last season, going out in the middle of a pandemic. I didn’t think it was going to happen."

Bakula thanked the fans of NCIS: New Orleans for their loyalty and unwavering support throughout the seven seasons despite minor time slot changes. The series has garnered an average rating of 6.8/10 stars on IMDb and 64% on Rotten Tomatoes. Bakula told TV Insider,

“I appreciate they’re sticking to us and sticking by us and that transfers to all around the planet. We’ve had a great run. They’ve been very supportive. They seem to have liked the show, they like the stories we told, the characters on the show, and that’s why we do it. We do it because we want people to grow a relationship and attach and invite us into their homes and we don’t take that lightly."

Why was NCIS: New Orleans cancelled after seven seasons?

NCIS: New Orleans, which premiered in 2014, was cancelled by the makers after seven seasons due to declining ratings. The finale was titled Laissez Les Bonz Temps Rouler and aired on May 23, 2021. By 2021, streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video had taken over, with most viewers shifting from traditional TV to OTT platforms. Hence, even long-running popular shows such as NCIS: New Orleans lost viewers to the OTT giants.

Additionally, the pandemic had affected the production of several shows. There was a significant drop in viewership from Season 6 to Season 7. CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl told Deadline in a 2021 interview,

"New Orleans was an excellent show for us. But sometimes shows hit the end of their cycle, and we have to, in some cases, say goodbye."

NCIS: New Orleans- Ending explained

NCIS: New Orleans Season 7 finale episode did manage to wrap up all the plotlines. Towards the second half of the finale season, the show delved into the personal lives of Special Agent Pride and his team. It was quite emotional for Pride when he found out his mother had only a few weeks to live. Thus, he rushed his wedding with Rita Devereaux.

On the other hand, the relationship with his son Connor was strained because he believed that Pride put his mother, Sasha, in jail. However, as the investigation progressed, Connor realized his father was right and his mother, Sasha, was a criminal. However, upon seeing Connor being arrested by the FBI, Sasha came clean and confessed to her crimes.

The finale episode featured Pride and Rita's wedding in Loretta Wade's backyard. During the after party, when Sasha came to pick up Connor, she saw him having fun and decided to leave him there and escape.

By the end of the episode, the viewers find out that Laurel is engaged. Agent Carter decided to stay in New Orleans for Hannah Khoury, while Gregorio and her girlfriend moved in together. What stands out is Pride's reception speech, where he not only thanked his team but the fans, too!
