One of the more fascinating aspects of Star Trek is the way the infinite possibility of the universe is explored. Over the last few decades, the franchise has introduced us to many mysterious alien lifeforms, planets, and entities, one of them being the Great Barrier from Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989).
It is an energy field at the core of the galaxy. As the movie makes abundantly clear, it is an extremely dangerous zone with unknown properties. Even probes sent their way have vanished.
In the movie, Spock's (played by Leonard Nimoy) brother Sybok (played by Laurence Luckinbill) believes that God resides beyond the Great Barrier on the mythical planet Sha Ke Ree. His obsession with finding God would make him take control of the USS Enterprise. While they do find the planet, the entity they encounter is anything but ‘God’.
From the Borg, the Nexus realm, to the mysterious Q, Star Trek has explored various subjects that make the unknown even more intriguing. The Great Barrier follows the same pattern. The entity on the planet within the barrier is shrouded in mystery, as is its creator. Star Trek thrives on the enigma around it, and it will continue to do so to showcase the larger-than-life appeal of the galaxy. It works well for the franchise to resist the temptation to build further storylines around it.
What is the Great Barrier in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier?
Captain James T. Kirk (played by William Shatner) and the USS Enterprise are on the way to rescue three diplomats who were being held hostage on Nimbus III by Sybok and his followers.
Sybok takes control of the ship to venture into the Great Barrier, an infamous energy field at the center of the Milky Way galaxy. He asserts that the 'God' lives on the planet Sha Ka Ree beyond the Great Barrier, and the danger is just an illusion.
Beyond the Great Barrier, the Enterprise encounters the ‘God’ entity on the inhospitable planet. Sybok is overwhelmed to finally find the 'God'. However, the 'God' asks for access to the Enterprise. Kirk suspiciously asks why a God would need a starship.
The malevolent alien entity unleashes its rage. Sybok dies after finally realizing his misstep. Kirk and the crew learn that the Great Barrier was built to keep the entity imprisoned on the planet. The ‘false God’ is attacked by the Enterprise using photon torpedoes, but it survives. Kirk escapes the planet with Spock's help.
It is to be noted that the Star Trek universe has another such phenomenon, the Galactic Barrier, which is equally mysterious and deadly. The Galactic Barrier falls in the rim of the Milky Way Galaxy and was first seen in The Original Series Season 1 episode, ‘Where No Man Has Gone Before.’ The barrier would appear multiple times throughout the series. In Star Trek: Discovery, the ship goes through the Galactic Barrier and encounters Species 10-C, who created the Dark Matter Anomaly.
While the subject of the Great Barrier was hardly brought up again, it is understood that the entity beyond the barrier is immensely powerful, capable of absolute destruction. The only way to approach the barrier again would be to unleash the unknown alien entity, but that would shatter the secrecy around it. As much as it is an interesting subject, Star Trek may not touch upon this again to preserve the mysteries of the universe.
