Outlander fans will time-travel to the past with the upcoming Starz series Blood of My Blood. The prequel spin-off series is based on author Diana Gabaldon's world and will feature the love stories of Jamie and Claire's parents in two different periods.

The success of the parent series naturally paved the way for the prequel, which will feature two epic love stories, set in two time periods. While Jamie's parents are two star-crossed lovers, who will fall in love in the 1700s Scottish Highlands, Claire's parents will connect through letters during World War I.

In addition to these love tales, Blood of My Blood will also feature the origin of the McKenzie clan and how Brian Fraser (Jamie's father) came to be associated with it.

Since the prequel series will feature the McKenzie clan in its prime, the fans will get to see many OG Outlander characters in their youth, including Colum and Dougal McKenzie.

Gary Lewis and Graham McTavish played the characters of Colum and Dougal, respectively, in Outlander, and now the torch has been passed to young actors. Actors Seamus McLean Ross and Sam Retford will play young Colum and Dougal in the prequel series.

More on this in our story.

Blood of My Blood will feature young Dougal & Colum MacKenzie from Outlander

While Outlander manages to maintain the quality of its story throughout the seasons, there is no doubt that Season 1 was the best. Claire falling through the stones, Jamie and Claire's first encounter, their eventual love story, and Castle Leoch.

Castle Leoch is the first grand location we see in the show, and Blood of My Blood will also start its lore from this iconic location. However, don't expect to find Jamie hiding in the stables as the prequel series will feature his father, Brian Fraser.

Along with Jamie and Claire's parents, the spin-off series will also feature many Outlander characters in their prime, including Dougal and Colum McKenzie. The brothers were an integral part of the Starz show, and I look forward to seeing how they came to lead their clan.

The show established the McKenzie brothers as the powerful duo who strengthened their clan and also allowed their nephew Jamie to stay in the palace. While the parent series saw the brewing tensions between the brothers, we never got to see their origin.

While Cloum was the laird (head) of the McKenzie clan in Outlander, Dougal always deemed himself to be fit to rule, partly because of Colum's Toulouse-Lautrec Syndrome, which caused him difficulty in walking.

Dougal wanted to take his brother's place on the throne, and he made many decisions behind his back, like raising money for the Jacobite army in Season 1.

Blood of My Blood will begin in the Scottish Highlands, with Dougal and Colum in their fighting prime. After the death of the McKenzie clan's laird, the brothers will see an opportunity to rise, and the prequel series will likely see tensions brewing between them for the throne.

While we all know that Colum will eventually succeed the throne, the fight would be worthwhile, and Blood of My Blood will likely feature their complicated dynamic.

The origin story of Colum and Dougal not only expands on the clan McKenzie's lore from Outlander, but it will also provide a better understanding of the rivalries and alliances formed during that time, which eventually shaped Jamie's life.

Blood of My Blood will premiere on Starz on August 8, 2025.
