Prime Video's latest Bosch spin-off, Ballard, is still the talk of the town over a month after its premiere, and with the perfect rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the crime drama is doing wonders on streaming charts. The titular character, Detective Renée Ballard (played by Maggie Q), takes us through her chronicles with the Cold Case Unit of the Los Angeles Police Department, where the first mention of the iconic Harry Bosch comes pretty early in the show.

While investigating Councilman Jake Pearlman's sister, Sarah's murder, and the John Doe case in Episode 1, Ballard finds potential connections with another homicide from 2008. The name of the victim was Laura Wilson, and to the great surprise of the Cold Case Division, the investigating officer turns out to be (as Renée Ballard says):

"Harry f**cking Bosch."

Though Harry Bosch does not physically appear in Episode 1 of Prime Video's Ballard, his reference comes quite early. However, close to the end of the second episode, Bosch arrives at the Cold Case Department, and he appears upset about the fact that Ballard tried to meddle with the rapport he had with the late Laura Wilson's mother, Vivian Wilson. Despite the differences, the two eventually reconcile, and Bosch helps Ballard with her investigation.

As we see in Ballard Episode 2, Renée Ballard was "trying to connect Laura's murder to Sarah" after the cleaning lady at the lodge, Yulia, was murdered, thereby bringing new leads. Though Harry Bosch initially appears unconvinced about Ballard's theory, he starts believing her when the latter confirms that the two cases are connected by DNA and everyone was wrong with the initial investigation.

Following their bittersweet reunion in Ballard Episode 2, Bosch realizes that he might have been a little rude to Renée Ballard and offers to buy her lunch. The next sequence at RUTT's Hawaiian Cafe starts on a heartwarming note as Bosch jokingly asks Ballard why she did not call him to turn her "cold case closed."

To this, Renée Ballard replies:

"You would never last. You're a lone wolf, Harry Bosch."

Bosch further mocks Ballard, saying:

"Oh, yeah. Says the detective who decided not to reach out and get background on the Laura Wilson case."

The sequence from Ballard Episode 2 is a clear portrayal of the fact that the two titular characters share a special bond. Moreover, Ballard opens up to Bosch about how it sometimes can be overwhelming for her to lead the Cold Case Division. Bosch's re-emergence in the hit procedural franchise has been long-awaited, and the reunion of the old and the new was absolutely perfect.

Ballard not only sees Bosch as a friend and ally but also as a visionary officer whose unconventional approach to homicide made him a well-recognized face in the LAPD over the years. Taking his input on the cold cases, Ballard finds a new approach in her investigation and the confidence that she had been lacking because of her past problems with the department.
