Invincible fans have been waiting for the arrival of the Viltrumite antagonist Conquest for a while. For years, fans who had read the comics were hoping for the introduction of Conquest when Breaking Bad's Jonathan Banks was announced to be part of season 3 for an unannounced role. Fans around the world theorized that Banks was voicing the fan-favorite Viltrumite warrior.
However, as episode 7, "What Have I Done?" revealed, Jonathan Banks was voicing the character called Brit, a super-soldier. Conquest, on the other hand, is voiced by none other than Jeffrey Dean Morgan, the same actor who played the cynical and deranged vigilante The Comedian in the 2009 movie Watchmen. This was a surprising turn that no Invincible fan was expecting.
Exploring Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Invincible role
Episode 7 was devastating for our heroes as Angstrom Levy lets loose eighteen evil Mark Grayson variants across the multiverse on the Earth of the heroic Mark. These variants inflict a lot of death and destruction on the world, including some heroes. As our Invincible is helping the rescue operation, an intimidating and sinister figure flies in front of him.
This figure belongs to the warrior from Viltrum named Conquest, who is voiced by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. As stated earlier, Morgan has been a part of dark comic-book and superhero universes for over a decade. He played the role of Comedian in the 2009 Watchmen movie directed by Zack Snyder. In that movie, he is a vigilante whose legacy is filled with blood and atrocities.
After that, in 2016, he reunited with his Watchmen director Zack Snyder to play Thomas Wayne in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and the same year, he joined The Walking Dead's sixth season as Negan. The show is based on Invincible creator Robert Kirkman's long-running comic book series of the same name.
Then, in 2024, Morgan also played the role of Billy Butcher's darker half Joe Kessler in The Boys Season 4. Thus, at this time, it isn't a surprise that dark and gritty comic book or superhero stories like Watchmen, The Walking Dead, The Boys, and Invincible will involve Jeffrey Dean Morgan in some capacity.
While discussing Jeffrey Dean Morgan's involvement in the animated series, Kirkman revealed that he considered the actor for a role in the series:
"Since the beginning of the show's existence."
Explaining Conquest, the writer further expanded:
"Conquest needs a lot of nuance. There's a tremendous amount of personality there, even though he is this giant, powerful brute that's just wrecking things. And I knew Jeffrey could bring that."
What will the season 3 finale be about?
As the concluding moments of the seventh episode hinted, the season 3 finale will feature an even more devastating fight between Mark Grayson's alter ego and the Viltrumite warrior Conquest. Fans who have read the comics will know that Conquest is one of the most vicious characters. This fight lasted for nearly four issues, between #61 and #65.
It remains to be seen if this fight will end on a cliffhanger and will carry on to the next season. But all eyes are on next week's finale as one of the popular characters will be one of the main characters in the episode.
Invincible will stream its finale "I Thought You'd Never Shut Up" on March 13, 2025, on Prime Video.
