It's almost time for a final adventure in the Borderland, as Alice in Borderland Season 3 will arrive on Netflix on September 25, concluding Arisu and Usagi's dystopian tale.

The beloved Japanese thriller series premiered on Netflix in 2020 and climbed the platform's top charts, earning a Season 3 renewal. Alice in Borderland follows Arisu (Kento Yamazaki), Usagi (Tao Tsuchiya), and other Tokyo residents as they are transported into a parallel and abandoned alternate reality. They must overcome a series of deadly games to return to their real world.

The Netflix series is based on Haro Aso's eponymous and beloved manga series. Aso's manga has found a new audience and achieved International success, following the Netflix adaptation. The series closely follows Aso's story throughout two seasons.

However, Alice in Borderland Season 3 will follow an original story. Since Aso's story ended with Arisu and Usagi's arrival in their real world (as shown in the Season 2 finale), the final season will follow a new and original story.

More on Alice in Borderland Season 3 in our story.

As mentioned earlier, the Netflix thriller is based on a manga series. However, Alice in Borderland Season 3 will follow an original story about the Joker card teased in the Season 2 finale. Arisu, Usagi, and the other Borderland characters have completed all the deadly games of the number and face cards in the past two seasons, and now it's time for the Joker to reveal his identity.

While the Joker briefly appears in Aso's manga as the ferryman who is tasked to take players from Borderland to the real world, he was absent from the Netflix adaptation. The series closely followed Aso's manga series throughout Seasons 1 and 2. However, in the Season 2 finale, after all the players choose to go back to their real world, the Joker appears to accompany them in the manga. While the figure was absent in the series, and the characters were directly shown waking up in a hospital, a final Joker card was teased, setting the stage for Alice in Borderland Season 3.

In addition to Aso's manga series, a short story titled Alice in Borderland: Retry was also released, which followed Arisu and Usagi as they got married and had a child in the real world. The final season will not likely be based on that story, as it was not set in Borderland and was more like an epilogue than a sequel.

This suggests that Season 3 will follow an original narrative, with new challenges and games for our players.

What can you expect from Alice in Borderland Season 3?

Since Alice in Borderland Season 3 isn’t based on the manga, Arisu and Usagi’s fate, and the deadly new challenges awaiting them in the Borderland, remain a mystery. Aside from the appearance of the final Joker card, the Season 2 finale offered what felt like a conclusive ending that closely followed Aso’s original manga.

Now that the Joker card is teased, Arisu and Usagi will be lured back into the Borderland for one final round. However, their adventure in purgatory will be even deadlier in the final season, as they will be tragically separated.

According to the official description of Season 3, Usagi will be lured back into the Borderland by a mysterious scholar obsessed with the afterlife. Arisu will soon follow her suit and try to save her. As seen in the Alice in Borderland Season 3 trailer, Arisu will have to race against time and complete all the deadly challenges in the Borderland before being reunited with Usagi. The Joker card is not only the most dangerous but also unpredictable, which will increase the stakes of their competition.

The stars of the show have also teased that Alice in Borderland Season 3 will have the most impactful and unique games. In Netflix's press release for the final season, Tsuchiya teased:

“As the players become more desperate, everyone’s performances become more intense and dramatic. I think this game really captures the essence of Alice in Borderland — it’s about life and death, and about discovering how you truly want to live.''

Tune into the final season of Alice in Borderland on Netflix on September 25.
