In the final moments of The Institute Season 1 finale, Luke and some kids witnessed the physical destruction of the facility. But their nightmarish ordeal at the hands of higher-ups is far from over, as the MGM+ supernatural series is renewed for Season 2.
Based on Stephen King's 2019 horror novel of the same name, the Season 1 finale featured a satisfying fall of the facility after Avery and the other back-half kids connected their minds with Luke. Their combined heightened powers resulted in the collapse of the facility, engulfing Stackhouse with it.
While the fall of the facility was certainly a win for Luke and Tim in The Institute Season 1 finale, their journey for justice has just begun. Stackhouse's concerns in the finale confirmed that the Dennison River Bend branch was just one of the many facilities operating in different parts of the world, conducting twisted experiments for the 'greater good.'
More on this in our story.
The bittersweet fall of the facility in The Institute Season 1 finale
The end was near for Ms. Sigsby, the ruthless overseer of the sick experiments at the facility, in The Institute Season 1 finale. However, after Luke learns that Avery and the kids are trapped at the facility by Stackhouse, they take a detour to save the children, which was the supposed beginning of the fall of the titular facility.
While Tim and Wendy dupe Stackhouse, Luke cunningly slips inside the facility and reaches the corridor where Avery and the kids are being held. Luke plans to telepathically connect his mind with Avery and the other kids, thus lifting the barrier that separates them. However, in a shocking twist in The Institute Season 1 finale, the kids manage to connect their minds with other back-half kids from around the world and use their heightened power to destroy the barrier between Luke and Avery.
Since Avery and the kids were operating at the peak of their powers, their display of power went a little overboard and eventually led to the collapse of the facility. The mayhem caused by the collapse was so brutal that while Stackhouse was trying to escape outside, the floor beneath his feet gave way, resulting in his death.
While Luke managed to escape to the outside of the facility's perimeter with George, Nicky, and Kalisha, Avery and the other kids stayed inside to maintain their 'connection' and see the collapse of the facility through to the end. In The Institute Season 1's final moments, Luke witnessed the fall of the facility, which supposedly took Avery and the kids with it.
The Institute Season 1 finale: Why does the fall of the facility not feel definitive?
The fall of the titular facility was one of the most anticipated events from King's adaptations, and even while The Institute Season 1 finale featured this long-awaited fall, it did not feel satisfactory. This is primarily because of the changes made to King's ending, partly to leave a door open for Season 2.
While Luke managed to spill everything to the FBI about the titular facility, leading to its complete shutdown and Ms. Sigsby winding up in custody in King's novel, nothing of the sort happened in the MGM+ series. The tangible fall merely destroyed Luke's nightmare and some of the bad guys (like Tony and Stackhouse), but Sigsby managed to escape, with Maureen's flash drive.
In addition, the final moments featured The Man on the Phone ordering a 'burn team' to destroy every evidence of their illicit experiments in the facility, before casually stepping out to play with some children. This nonchalant attitude of the higher-ups hinted that the Dennison River Bend branch was merely a pawn in the larger chess game and that there are still many facilities conducting sick and twisted experiments on children.
The Institute Season 1 is streaming on MGM+.
