Stephen King's telepathic children are still getting into trouble at The Institute. MGM+ has officially picked up the hit TV series based on King's 2019 book for a Season 2 with eight episodes! The horror legend himself announced this after the show's record-setting premiere as MGM+'s best. Season 2 will be more evil because Season 1 ended with a telekinetic explosion.
Produced by King, Benjamin Cavell (Justified, The Stand), and Jack Bender (Lost, Mr. Mercedes), the series received praise for bringing out King's signature dread without relying too heavily on horror clichés... at least not up to the very end.
Along with rising stars Simone Miller, Fionn Laird, Jason Diaz, and Jane Luk, the first season had Ben Barnes, Mary-Louise Parker, and Joe Freeman. While the cast of Season 2 is still a mystery, expect some familiar faces (and telepathic looks) as half of the villains made it out uninjured!
The Institute Season 1 finale teed up a conspiracy
We don't think the first season wrapped everything up neatly, do you? The finale was a masterclass in Stephen King-style chaos, though.
The plan to gas Luke and the other psychic kids fell apart completely, regardless of the villains Stackhouse and Sigsby's tireless efforts to contain them. In a moment that reminds us of Yoda and Stephen King, Luke had (literally) ripped The Institute from the earth and slammed it back into nothingness by the end.
But this was more than a story of revenge.
A vast international chain of Institutes that experiment on children with superhuman abilities has been referred to in the season. It's likely that Avery's sacrifice telepathically brought these facilities together and will then lay the groundwork for a global uprising.
A shadowy "man on the phone" carelessly planned the cleanup before heading out to play with his children (or victims, because it's King, so who knows!), while power players like Sigsby ran off with the proof pointing to him.
MGM+ doubled down as Michael Wright, head of MGM+, said:
"We’re so happy to be able to continue and expand this chilling journey."
If Wright's teasing is believed, Season 2 will probably escalate the conspiracy, raise the risks, and put our heroes in even more risky situations.
Where and when to watch The Institute Season 2?
MGM+ has not yet disclosed a premiere date.
Still, Amazon MGM Studios will take care of worldwide distribution for the eight-episode sophomore season, which will be available on the platform in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and Colombia.
The Institute has become one of MGM+'s biggest hits thanks to its telepathic children, morally ambiguous adults, and enough psychological strain to keep you up at night. King seems thrilled as well.
King said in his announcement to Deadline:
"Set free but hunted, new dangers await the escapees from the Institute and I can’t wait."
That means more dark experiments, more eerie puppet-masters, and (based on that finale) plenty of telekinetic chaos for fans to witness. The conspiracies are only getting worse, so keep your tinfoil hats close at hand!
