The Lowdown on FX blends classic noir with the cultural history of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The series features Ethan Hawke as Lee Raybon, a citizen journalist who calls himself a “truthstorian” and doggedly tracks facts, corruption, and buried truths. Mixing mystery, dark comedy, and social satire, the series shows how one man’s pursuit of truth drives both his purpose and his undoing.

Set in Oklahoma, the thriller weaves together political intrigue, crime, and personal drama against the backdrop of the city’s past. In his performance, Hawke is the anchor of a series that features an imperfect but passionate truth-seeker in a place where history and current events intersect.

The question on many viewers’ minds is whether The Lowdown is based on a true story. The truth lies somewhere between reality and myth. While the plot itself is fictional, Raybon owes much to a late local historian and journalist, Lee Roy Chapman of Tulsa, who uncovered forgotten and uncomfortable truths about the city’s past.

Chapman, who passed away in 2015, was also credited with exposing the connections between Tulsa’s founder, Tate Brady, and the Ku Klux Klan. This revelation became part of a broader awakening for Tulsans about their own history. In an interview with TV Insider, Sterlin Harjo revealed:

“He was a really big inspiration on my work and who I am and how to think of where you live, and to look at your community right around you, and try to make a difference there.”

He added:

“He passed away, and I just always had this idea of taking that spirit and having that be the seed of the noir in Tulsa, and that’s really where the spark of the idea came from. And then, naturally, you call your friend Ethan Hawke and see if he’d be interested in doing it.”

Chapman closely collaborated with Sterlin Harjo, the helmer of The Lowdown, during his time at This Land Press, working together on a documentary series called Tulsa Public Secrets. Through that work, Chapman became recognized as someone who dutifully documented hidden histories and questioned accepted narratives.

In an interview with the Boston Herald, Harjo emphasized that the series is meant to honour Chapman without replicating his life directly. He revealed:

“Lowdown is meant to honour the spirit of who Lee Roy was. After that, it’s fiction.”

Unlike most detective dramas, The Lowdown follows an ordinary rare-book dealer who finds himself caught in events far beyond his control.

What is FX's The Lowdown about?

The Lowdown is essentially a crime thriller smothered in noir. The series begins with Lee Raybon writing an exposé about the Washberg family, a wealthy Tulsa dynasty with strong political ties. This act triggers a domino of violence, intimidation, and cover-ups that casts Lee both as a fierce crusader for truth and as a target of those aiming to impose silence.

The series ensnares the viewer in a tapestry of figures such as politicians, enforcers, and members of Lee’s own dysfunctional family. It plants these struggles in a city with its own troubled historical shadows. Infusing Lee with a sense of humour, vulnerability, and determination, Hawke imbues a man who demands the truth no matter how much danger it puts him in with depth. This rich character detail, along with Harjo’s storytelling and the historical setting of Tulsa, helps The Lowdown stand out in a crowded field of crime dramas.
