What happened in Episodes 1 and 2 of The Lowdown?
In Episodes 1 and 2 of The Lowdown, Ethan Hawke's Lee Raybon delves deeper into the investigation of Dale Washberg. He finds a note in Dale's first edition Thompson novel, which reveals that Dale's family might be involved in the untimely death of the man, especially his wife, Betty Jo.
With further investigation, he learns that Betty and Dale's brother, Donald, is having an affair, making him a crucial suspect. To gather more information about the family, he buys all of Dale's Jim Thompson novel collection.
Furthermore, he is also attacked by two former convicts named Berta and Blackie, who are angry at Lee for writing about them. However, Lee still does not stop and plans to write more, and he ends up being kidnapped by the duo. They take him with them to meet a contractor named Allen Murphy, who works for the Akron company.
Murphy kills both of them near an abandoned bridge, with Lee as a witness. Later, he meets Blackie's mother and learns that Allen has connections with Nazi gangs and that he had sent the former convicts on a job at Skaitook, which they failed. It is the same city where Dale lived and died, making Lee suspect foul play.
In the end, he even confronts Dale's brother, Donald, about being involved in his death, but Donald denies any such allegations. As the conversation gets heated, he is stopped by Marty, a private investigator hired to follow Lee, but Marty refuses to reveal who hired him.
