Netflix's Japanese thriller series, Alice in Borderland, returned with its Season 3 on September 25. The latest installment featured Arisu and Usagi's return to the titular Netherworld in an original narrative, which expanded Haro Aso's manga series. While the couple's Season 2 adventure had a definitive ending, the final Joker card set the stage for a harrowing Season 3.
Netflix has not confirmed Alice in Borderland Season 4 yet, but the Season 3 finale left many unanswered questions about the Borderland. While both Arisu and Usagi managed to return to the real world in the end, the finale teased an American spin-off series, like the critically acclaimed Squid Game.
Given the popularity of the Japanese thriller, the franchise can return with a new setting and introduce a host of other players from all over the world. The final tease of an impending natural disaster sets the stage for an ominous future for Arisu and Usagi, and the characters can surely return in Season 4.
But for now, there is no confirmation that Alice in Borderland Season 4 is in the works.
More on this in our story.
Is there going to be Alice in Borderland Season 4?
Alice in Borderland Season 3 was marketed as the final adventure for Arisu and Usagi in the Netherworld, featuring the Joker card. The protagonists found themselves back in purgatory and fought through new deadly games, but returned safely to the real world. In the Season 3 finale, Arisu and Usagi seem to be starting a new chapter of their lives, where they were planning on names for their baby.
While all was well, Arisu noticed suspicious activities all around the world, which eerily mimicked the Man in the Hat's predictions. This shocking reveal keeps the door open for future seasons.
In an interview with Radio Times, Tao Tsuchiya (Usagi) even shared a potential premise for Alice in Borderland Season 4:
“I have a premise where the child will find themselves in Borderland and the parents have to go in and save them. The kids don’t understand the world at all but then the parents do.''
While this premise is exciting and will give another chance for Arisu and Usagi to return to the Netherworld (to save their child), it might get repetitive. Additionally, since Season 3 was largely marketed as the final adventure for Arisu and Usagi in the Borderland, the future season might not feature the couple as main characters, but they can surely return in cameos.
The Alice in Borderland universe can expand with a spin-off series
The final moments of Alice in Borderland Season 3 shifted the narrative from Tokyo to an American diner. We see a waitress's name badge, which identifies her as Alice, and the screen cuts to black. While we never saw the woman's face, the final sequence suggests that she is the American counterpart of Arisu, who might be lured into the Borderland in a spin-off series.
Squid Game, one of the biggest titles on Netflix, is rumoured to expand its universe with an American sequel, and the Japanese thriller is likely taking a similar path. The American Alice tease suggests that a new crop of players will likely get their visas in Borderland, and the franchise can expand beyond Tokyo.
While Arisu and Usagi escaped in Alice in Borderland Season 3, the purgatory and its residents still exist. A new set of players and games is surely a unique way for a spin-off, which can also explore more mythology about this fascinating liminal space. However, Netflix has not made any official confirmation, either on Season 4 or on an American spin-off.
The Borderland world is brimming with opportunities, but fans will have to wait to see if the Netherworld will open its gate again.
Alice in Borderland Season 3 is now streaming on Netflix.
