The recently released Alice in Borderland Season 3 finally revealed the fates of Arisu and Usagi in the hit Japanese dystopian series, inspired by Haro Aso's manga. While the first two seasons closely followed Aso's manga and saw Arisu and Usagi as they struggled to survive in the parallel world, the latest installment is an original narrative.
The third season opens after a five-year time jump, where Arisu and Usagi are now married. The harrowing events of the past two seasons are affecting their lives, and they are being regularly interviewed about their time in the Netherworld. While neither of them has clear memories of the Borderland, Usagi is manipulated into returning to the purgatory by Ryuji, a professor obsessed with the afterlife. Ryuji strikes a deal with Banda, and the Borderland resident promises to give him a peek at his world if he brings Usagi back.
Thus began Arisu's adventure of bringing Usagi back in Alice in Borderland Season 3. Worried fans who are wondering if Arisu pulled a Gi-hun from Squid Game Season 3 and sacrificed himself for Usagi, worry not. The Japanese thriller featured a different ending for its characters, and Arisu did not die in Season 3. In the finale, both Arisu and Usagi managed to return to their real world again.
More on Alice in Borderland Season 3 in our story.
Does Arisu die in Alice in Borderland Season 3?
Like Mira's Queen of Hearts, Arisu met the Man in the Hat in Alice in Borderland Season 3, who was the equivalent of the ferryman from Aso's manga series. The ferryman was tasked with taking the souls from their real world to the Borderlands. Since Arisu, Usagi, and many other characters refused to stay in the Netherworld in the Season 2 finale, the Man in the Hat tries to convince Arisu of the benefits of this parallel world.
Like the Queen of Hearts, the final card game was manipulative and confusing for Arisu, and the Man in the Hat made some valid points about suffering in the real world. He left no card unturned to make the protagonist realize that his real world is filled with suffering and misery, and the Netherworld is bubbling with opportunities. However, Arisu is jolted by Usagi's voice and chooses to return to the real world once again. While living is painful and tragic, he still chose life over death and returned to his real world in Alice in Borderland Season 3.
In the final moments of the show, Arisu wakes up in the real world and thanks Ann for her help. He then rushes to the hospital and sees that Usagi has also regained her consciousness. The two finally embrace and Season 3 flashes forward to the couple deciding on their baby's name.
The Alice in Borderland Season 3 finale hints at a disaster
While Arisu and Usagi got their happy ending in Alice in Borderland Season 3, the series ends on an ambiguous note. Just before Arisu made his choice to return, the Man in the Hat warned him about a disaster coming into Arisu's real world. While this was initially thought to be a ploy to make Arisu choose the Netherworld, the Season 3 finale suggests that his predictions were true.
As Arisu watches the news, he realizes that massive earthquakes have hit various parts of the world. Furthermore, significant shifts have occurred in the tectonic plates, signaling that the Man in the Hat's predicted disaster will likely hit Arisu's real world soon.
While details of this disaster were not revealed, it might force Arisu and Usagi to return to the Borderland. But for now, the couple is happy and living their best life in the real world.
Alice in Borderland Season 3 is streaming on Netflix.
