Task Season 2 has not been greenlit yet. Ever since the very beginning, HBO marketed the show as if it were a miniseries rather than a scripted show with future seasons. However, that doesn't mean that Task is a miniseries; The main characters might return for a possible Task Season 2, but for a completely different case.

And in some cases, the makers of Task Season 2 might consider bringing back the series with new characters and new cases for a different FBI task force. Then, there's the fact that both Task and Mare of Easttown are set in the same universe. Showrunner Brad Ingelsby himself confirmed the two shows sharing continuity in a September 2025 Variety interview:

"Absolutely. We wanted to embrace that. We never said, “Let’s try to make it not like ‘Mare.'” In fact, a lot of the same crew from “Mare” worked on this show, because we wanted there to be a consistency, and we wanted the audience to watch the show and think, “This is ‘Mare’s’ world, but the story is different.”"

Thus, if there were to be another show in this continuity, we may get a crossover series instead of Mare of Easttown or Task Season 2.

As stated before, HBO hasn't greenlit the series for a second season. But Creator Brad Ingelsby, who is also its showrunner, has been outspoken about his interest in coming back for Task Season 2 or at least continuing the series in some way. He did so recently in an October 5, 2025, interview with Esquire after the fifth episode was released.

In that interview, Ingelsby and the Esquire reporter discussed the acclaimed HBO series. In jest, Brad Ingelsby joked that he is not letting go of the obsession with Pennsylvania any time soon. Then, he went on to discuss the possibility of a Task Season 2, saying:

"I'd love to have a chance to do another season of Task. What I love about TV is just how many characters you get to explore. I really see myself as a character writer and not a great plot writer. And so what I love about TV is that you get to explore the Grassos, the Lizzies, the Aleahs. If I was to do a movie, unless I was Robert Altman, I just wouldn't be able to tap into that many characters."

Does the Task finale set up a season 2?

No. The season finale, in fact, wraps up the different storylines that were planted since the first episode of the HBO series giving an impression that there would not be a Task Season 2. The task force manages to finally close the Dark Hearts case as Jayson is finally dead. Other prominent Dark Hearts leaders, like Vincent and Perry, die at the hands of different characters in the finale.

On the emotional side, Tom finally forgives Ethan in the closing minutes of the episode and tells the latter that he will wait for him. Moreover, a family adopts Sam; thus, Tom finally has to let go of the child he was bonding with. Ingelsby addressed Tom's heartbreaking decision in the finale regarding Sam leaving Tom. When The Wrap reporter asked the showrunner about Tom seeing Sam as a second chance for what happened with Ethan, the latter said:

"That’s exactly right. I really felt strongly that it was a betrayal of what the show was about. And it was tempting, because you get there and you go, “Oh, the audience probably wants this to wrap up neatly,” but it’s not what the show is about. I felt really strongly that “Mare of Easttown” was a show about a woman who stubbornly wouldn’t confront the death of her son. She was throwing herself into all situations not to confront the death of her son, so the ending, to me, was she literally has to go and confront the death of her son. And for me, the end of “Task” was I’ve gotta open the door to my son. I can’t forgive him. It’s so painful to me. I can’t do this thing. And then it’s through the journey of the case and his interactions with Robbie, and Robbie sacrificing himself to give his family this hope for a future that Tom ultimately comes around and says, “You know what, as much as I want this kid, I have to recommit to my son, and I’m scared about what’s going to happen when he comes home because my wife’s not here, and Emily is going to be in college, and I’m terrified, but I have to open the door.” It felt like it just had to end there, and luckily, HBO supported that choice, and I’m really proud of how it ends."

Thus, based on how it ended, there is very little room for a second season. However, HBO and Brad Ingelsby might take a page from The White Lotus and create a different storyline for a possible Task Season 2.
