While the DCU has recast some characters, actress Viola Davis will continue playing Amanda Waller in the new continuity, despite originating in the DCEU. For the uninitiated, Davis made her debut as the A.R.G.U.S. director in 2016's Suicide Squad, which was a part of the now-defunct DCEU. The actress then reprised her DC role in 2021's The Suicide Squad, again directed by James Gunn.
Now, elements of The Suicide Squad have been incorporated into the DCU, including Peacemaker killing Rick Flag Jr. and Viola Davis's character. There is also the HBO Max series titled Waller, which was announced on January 31, 2023, with other DCU projects like Superman, Lanterns, and The Brave and the Bold.
While the HBO Max series led by Davis is moving slowly, its script is still being worked on. Which is why many fans are theorizing that Peacemaker Season 2 might be subtly setting up the long-awaited DCU HBO Max project by having some Peacemaker characters appearing in the Viola Davis-headlined show.
How is Peacemaker setting up Waller according to fans?
Two episodes of Peacemaker Season 2 have been streamed, and Amanda Waller hasn't appeared in any of them. We know that Davis will play the role in the DCU as Amada was one of the central characters of Creature Commandos, and there she was voiced by the Suicide Squad actress. However, we can still feel the former A.R.G.U.S. director's presence despite not appearing in them.
The second episode begins with a flashback to the last act of 2021's The Suicide Squad, where Christopher kills Rick Flag Jr. John Economos tells the new A.R.G.U.S. director, Rick Flag Sr., that Peacemaker was acting under Amanda's orders, but Flag Sr. still holds Christopher guilty. As the Peacemaker is under A.R.G.U.S. surveillance, the rest of the 11th Street Kids are not in a good place.
Amanda's daughter, Leota Adebayo's business is struggling, and she has separated from her wife. On the other hand, Economos is forced to secretly spy on Christopher for work. However, it is Emilia Harcourt who is hit the hardest. While it was Leota who outed Amanda's human rights abuses through Task Force X, she is her daughter and supposedly taking her frustration out on Harcourt, who is black booked.
Therefore, many believe that each of the eight episodes of Peacemaker Season 2 will build a case against the old A.R.G.U.S. director, setting the stage for the long-awaited HBO show. While we don't know what the series is about, considering the promo image used in the announcement video, we can ascertain that the series will see Amanda in a trial, and her A.R.G.U.S., like Economos and Harcourt, could serve as witnesses.
What is the status of the Viola Davis series?
As mentioned earlier, the series was announced in January 2023. Since then, the series has been moving slowly. James Gunn has been clear that a DCU project will be green-lit only if it has a complete script. Considering we have not heard much about it, the writers are still working on its script.
Gunn confirmed that DC Studios is still working on the script in an interview with People Magazine on August 13, 2025:
“We're working on it, so we'll see what happens. Some things have moved faster than others. Waller's not been the fastest. But I can’t wait to see Viola put on their Waller pants again.”
