Ever since Watson Season 2 has premiered, audiences are wondering whether Sherlock Holmes has actually returned from the dead or if the detective is only being hallucinated by his best friend, Dr. John Watson.

After a glimpse of Sherlock in the premiere, the season’s second episode brings him face-to-face with Watson, and the detective reveals how he faked his death and tricked the world. However, fans are still confused about his fate, with many believing that Watson could be imagining his best friend.

Robert Carlyle, who plays the detective in Watson Season 2, has now given out a statement that might clear the air. In an interview with TV Insider, the actor said that as far as he is concerned, Sherlock is very much alive in the show.

During the interview, Robert Carlyle said that while Sherlock Holmes is alive, according to him, the creators have purposely introduced a mystery in Watson Season 2 for the viewers to figure out. He said:

“Well, as far as I’m concerned, he’s very much alive. The whole idea of that is kind of like a Sherlock Watson type of thing; it’s a mystery in itself for the viewers to try and figure that out.”

Carlyle further revealed that he will continue to make appearances in the new season. He confirmed that Sherlock is going to appear in Episodes 5, 8, and 10, the latter being the mid-season finale. Teasing what to expect from these episodes, the actor said:

“I can tell you that he appears in [Episode] 5. And then I think it’s 8, certainly 10, which is the mid-season finale, which is the one that we’re shooting at the moment. This is where things begin to really ramp up, and there’s a problem with Sherlock. I can tell you that there’s a problem with Sherlock, and Watson wants to try and help his friend through this.”

In the first season of the mystery medical drama, it was stated that Sherlock had died at the hands of Moriarty. However, in the Watson Season 2 premiere, he surprisingly intruded into Watson’s home and checked out his fridge for food.

In the second episode of the season, Back from the Dead, Sherlock explained that he staged his death to outsmart Moriarty. He then tried to fit back into Watson’s life and teased him about the choices he had made since the funeral, especially his stalled romance with Mary Morstan and his rivalry with Dr. Derian.

After helping solve the episode’s case, Sherlock vanished again and promised that he would be back for a ‘third act surprise’. Apart from Robert Carlyle, the show stars Morris Chestnut as John Watson, Ritchie Coster as Shinwell Johnson, Peter Mark Kendall as Stephens Croft and Adam Croft, Inga Schlingmann as Sasha Lubbock, Eve Harlow as Ingrid Derian, and Rochelle Aytes as Mary Morstan.

Watson Season 2 airs new episodes on CBS on Mondays.
