The Legend of Vox Machina premiered on Prime Video in January 2022 to a rousing reception. The Mighty Nein premiered on November 19, 2025, with three episodes. The series is a sequel and the second campaign for Critical Role of Dungeons & Dragons. Though both the series share the common universe of Exandria, the two stories are a lot different.

Is The Mighty Nein connected to The Legend of Vox Machina?

The Mighty Nein is set about 20 years from the events of The Legend of Vox Machina, which was the first campaign of Critical Role. While the new series is set on the continent of Wildemount, its predecessor was based in the continent of Tal’Dorei. Both being part of the fictional world of Exandria. The two however share the same Dungeons & Dragon campaign guidelines, like any other. Despite the connection, The Mighty Nein is a brand-new adventure to take on with fresh characters and narrative.

One of the more common reservations that the new viewers probably have is if one should watch The Legend of Vox Machina before starting The Might Nein. Since the story takes place in the same universe of Exandria, it is always helpful to come on board with prior knowledge. Understanding the intricate magical world will always comes handy. That said, it is not necessary that one should watch the other Critical Role campaign, before starting the new show. They are both distinctive in their own way. As a matter of fact, The Mighty Nein presents a larger world with more character details that is delightful on its own.

The Legend of Vox Machina remains one of the more successful shows with an impressive 100% critics score and 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes for its three series. Its successor also follows in similar footsteps with 100% critics’ score and 95% audience score.

As per Paste Magazine, Travis Willingham of Critical Role Productions shared that The Mighty Nein will explore the universe and characters more than its predecessor. He said,

“There’s so much story here. The characters are so complex, and we knew we had a ton of story to tell. In Vox Machina, we really tried to cram a lot of things in the episodes, and we found ourselves constrained, pushing against the limits of that 22-minute format. When we were able to secure 44 [minutes], we knew we had a bit more runway for these stories, and I think we’re taking a bit more of a patient approach.”

Willingham continued,

“The world is so big, and it’s a big buy-in—there’s a lot of things people are going to have to chew on and digest, and figure out how that makes them feel about the things that are being introduced episode after episode, so I think that was the biggest change going forward. We want to pay homage to the Mighty Nein, do it right, set up the world in a way that makes sense (from an audience perspective), and hopefully deliver some thrills for people who think they know everything there is to know about the Mighty Nein.”

The Mighty Nein first season comprises eight episodes.. The series takes off with the party that includes wizard Caleb Widogast (voiced by Liam O'Brien), Nott the Brave (voiced by Sam Riegel), monk Beauregard Lionett (voiced by Marisha Ray), seaman Fjord Stone (Travis Willingham), Jester Lavorre (voiced by Laura Bailey), hunter Mollymauk Tealeaf (voiced by Taliesin Jaffe) and barbarian Yasha (voiced by Ashley Johnson). Their complex stories, need for greater good and hunger for adventure forms the foundation of the campaign. With a massive political conflict about to shake their world, the unlikely protagonists decide to band together.

The campaigns from Critical Role remains one of the more successful venture with The Mighty Nein set to continue to forge its path.
