Ever since The Runarounds was announced as being in development at Prime Video, its name has been linked to the hit Netflix series Outer Banks. Beyond being teen dramas, the two shows also share a creative link; Jonas Pate, who co-created Outer Banks, is behind The Runarounds as well.

Additionally, the band featured in the Prime Video series first appeared in the Netflix show. This has made the audience wonder whether the two series are set in the same universe.

Well, The Runarounds is not an official spin-off of Outer Banks. Though the two shows have some commonalities, they have distinct storylines and narratives. With one being aired on Prime Video and the other being released on Netflix, there is little to no possibility of a crossover between the two.

The Runarounds’ narrative is not directly connected to Outer Banks; however, the credit for the creation of the show partly goes to the Netflix series. While producing Outer Banks Season 3, the team needed a live band for a scene. Jonas Pate decided to cast a real band through an open audition.

And hence, the titular band was formed by Axel Ellis, Jesse Golliher, William Lipton, Jeremy Yun, and Zendé Murdock in 2021. The group appeared in Outer Banks Season 3 Episode 7, Happy Anniversary, as they performed in the background during the wedding anniversary celebrations of Kiara's parents.

Jonas Pate was then inspired to make a series based on the band’s real-life journey, and hence, the Prime Video series came into being. Thus, Outer Banks was in a way responsible for the creation of The Runarounds, but the connection ends there. The two shows are not linked from the story’s perspective, and are not going to crossover into each other.

The Runarounds cast opened up about how their show is not an official spin-off of Outer Banks in an interview with US Weekly. Zendé Murdock, who plays Bez Willis, said that the band’s performance scene in the Netflix series should not be taken too seriously, as the two shows are not based in the same universe:

“That was more for us in real life to go off the creation. That doesn’t have much to do with the universe.”

Axel Ellis, who plays Neil Crosby, added that their Outer Banks appearance was a one-off thing, which might not happen again:

“I think [our band] were just established enough to get a wedding anniversary gig on Outer Banks. They were still a high school band kind of learning the ropes. They probably messed up a thing or two with that.”

Set in Wilmington, North Carolina, the show revolves around a bunch of recent high school graduates who form a band due to their shared love of music. The series chronicles their journey as they deal with heartbreaks and teenage issues and try to get a shot at stardom.

Outer Banks, on the other hand, revolves around two groups of teenagers who are divided based on social and financial status. The show has been going on since 2020 and will soon return with its fifth and final season on Netflix.

All episodes of The Runarounds are streaming on Prime Video.
