The release of Wednesday Season 2 is just days away now, marking the end of a three-year-long wait by the audience. Just as the cast and crew are busy promoting the new chapter, reports started surfacing that the show might be getting a spin-off.
Series creator Alfred Gough recently said in an interview that the team would like to explore other characters from the series who could go on to lead their own shows. However, in another interview, the creator shared a disappointing update about the potential spin-off.
During a conversation with Collider, Gough revealed that a Wednesday spin-off is not actively in development, as the team wants to focus on continuing the original series and releasing its new seasons as soon as possible.
A Wednesday spin-off is not actively in development
In the interview, Alfred Gough said that after Wednesday Season 2, the production team is directly moving on to work on Season 3 to minimize the gap between releases. Therefore, they currently do not have time for a spin-off series. He said:
“It’s not a priority at the moment because, as we just said, it’s how do we get Wednesday back faster than we did in Season 2? So, we kind of went right from finishing Season 2 to jumping right into developing Season 3. So, it’s sort of all Wednesday all the time at the moment.”
However, while a spin-off is not in the works at the moment, that could change in the future. The show has proven to be a massive success for Netflix, breaking streaming records when it debuted in 2022. The platform would likely want to turn it into a franchise, considering its profitability.
Meanwhile, the eccentric characters in the show do have potential for multiple spin-offs. That is what Gough also said during an earlier interview with The Hollywood Reporter, which sparked the initial buzz about the series getting an offshoot. He stated at the time:
“It’s something we’re definitely noodling; there are other characters we can look at.”
Hence, a Wednesday spin-off is not on the creator’s priority list currently, but it could become a reality in the future.
Meanwhile, Season 2 of the series is all set to premiere on Netflix on August 6, 2025, with its first four episodes. The remaining four episodes will drop later on September 3, 2025.
The season brings back Jenna Ortega as the titular teenager with psychic powers. Other returning cast members include Hunter Doohan as Tyler Galpin, Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair, Moosa Mostafa as Eugene, Victor Dorobantu as Thing, Joy Sunday as Bianca Barclay, and Georgie Farmer as Ajax.
The new cast members in Season 2 are Steve Buscemi, Owen Painter, Noah B. Taylor, Evie Templeton, and Billie Piper. The show will also feature guest appearances by Lady Gaga, Thandiwe Newton, Heather Matarazzo, Frances O’Connor, Haley Joel Osment, Joonas Suotamo, Joanna Lumley, and Christopher Lloyd.
