The first episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 was memorable for a number of reasons. Not only did it mark the show’s return after a long wait of two years, but it also presented the second part of its crossover with Abbott Elementary.

However, after a laugh riot, the episode, titled The Gang F***s Up Abbott Elementary, ended on a surprising note that left fans scratching their heads. Ahead of the credits roll, a special message appeared on the screen which said:

“In loving memory of Eric Beirmann.”

Ever since, audiences have been wondering who Eric Biermann is and what his connection is with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Eric Biermann was the brother of Season 17 Episode 1 director Todd Biermann. He sadly passed away last year, and Todd decided to honor him with a tribute in the show.


It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Who was Eric Biermann?

Eric Biermann was the brother of Todd Biermann. Todd is the director of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 Episode 1. He has been associated with the sitcom since 2012 and has helmed its 17 episodes across various seasons. Todd has also worked on several other acclaimed shows like Ghosts, Mythic Quest, Superstore, and Black-ish.

Even though Eric Biermann was not directly involved in the making of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, his brother likely wanted to honor his memory, and hence, dedicated the Season 17 premiere episode to him.

Eric, who hailed from Philadelphia, passed away on October 12, 2024, at the age of 42. While the cause of his death remains unknown, his obituary mentions that his demise was unexpected.

The filming for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 began in October 2024; hence, it is possible that Todd was still grappling with his loss when he directed the episode. As per Eric’s family, he was a loving son, brother, uncle, and friend. His obituary reads:

“Eric lit up every room from the moment that he walked in. He always loved to be surrounded by his family and friends, especially when that meant going out to eat. He had a heart of gold and was devoted to his friends. Eric had more than a few people who considered him their best friend.”

Professionally, Eric worked as an entertainment producer. He had been employed by firms like Golf Channel, Banyan Productions, and Al Roker Entertainment. He also worked as an assistant at Stage 3 Productions.

Meanwhile, Todd Biermann has directed some hilarious episodes of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, especially the premiere episodes of Seasons 10, 13, and 15. The rest of his credits on the show include the episodes The Gang Replaces Dee With a Monkey, The Gang Gets Analyzed, and Psycho Pete Returns.

The new season of the show stars Charlie Day as Charlie Kelly, Rob Mac as Ronald "Mac" McDonald, Danny DeVito as Frank Reynolds, Glenn Howerton as Dennis Reynolds, Kaitlin Olson as Deandra "Dee" Reynolds, Mary Elizabeth Ellis as The Waitress, and David Hornsby as Matthew "Rickety Cricket" Mara.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 airs new episodes on FXX on Wednesdays.
