Sweet Magnolias has mostly focused on subjects like romance, family, and career, and the show has stayed away from darker themes like death. However, that changed in Season 4 when Bill Townsend unexpectedly passed away due to a heart attack.

The twist came as a surprise, not only for Bill’s family but also for the fans. Now that Sweet Magnolias Season 5 is in development, the audience is wondering if the show will explore a similar storyline again.

JoAnna Garcia Swisher, who stars in the show as Maddie Townsend, Bill’s ex-wife, has now confirmed that nobody is going to die in Season 5. Instead, the show will go back to its roots with some highly dramatic moments. The actress said in an interview with Us Weekly:

“No one dies [in Season 5]. But it’s extremely dramatic. It’s a roller coaster - as it always is - but I think this is the first season in a really long time that fans are gonna get those butterflies again.”

Apart from confirming that there are no more deaths in Sweet Magnolias Season 5, JoAnna Garcia Swisher also talked about what to expect from the upcoming chapter. She said there are going to be some new faces in the show:

“There are some fresh faces that are joining our cast in really unique and fun ways. The Magnolias are seeing new possibilities on the horizon that are going to only expand our world.”

The new additions to the cast include Courtney Grace as Courtney Sinclair, John Gabriel Rodriquez as Clark Bellson, Austin Woods as Blake Monaghan, Aidan Merwarth as Noah Wharton, Iman Benson as Jessica Whitley, Janice Wesley as Miss Eustice, and Jamie-Lynn Sigler as Nell Winters.

At the end of Sweet Magnolias Season 4, Maddie was offered a job in New York City, which explains how the show’s world is going to expand. The production of Season 5 is already underway in New York and Atlanta.

The returning cast members in Sweet Magnolias Season 5 include JoAnna Garcia Swisher as Maddie Townsend, Heather Headley as Helen Decatur, Brooke Elliott as Dana Sue Sullivan, Justin Bruening as Cal Maddox, Carson Rowland as Tyler "Ty" Townsend, Anneliese Judge as Annie Sullivan, Logan Allen as Kyle Townsend, Jamie Lynn Spears as Noreen Fitzgibbons, Chris Medlin as Isaac Downey, Brandon Quinn as Ronnie Sullivan, and Dion Johnstone as Erik Whitley.

Meanwhile, Bill’s death in Season 4 marked one of the most surprising moments of the show. Played by Chris Klein, the character was killed off-screen, which made his death even more heartbreaking. Series creator Sheryl J. Anderson later revealed the reason behind the twist in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. He said:

“We wanted to be able to trace the shock waves of a single event across this tightly bound group of friends and, of course, his family, in a way that everybody had to stop and take a really deep, thoughtful look at what they were doing with their lives, which leads more than one person to make some bold changes.”

The premiere date of Sweet Magnolias Season 5 has not been announced yet.
