IT: Welcome to Derry's premiere ends unexpectedly, as three of the characters hyped up as the series' protagonists die. Only two characters, Lilly and Ronnie, survive the ordeal in the closing minutes of the first episode. Television, will debut early on HBO Max in celebration of Halloween, beginning Friday, October 31 at 12:00am PT/3:00am ET. The episode will also air on HBO on Sunday, November 2 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT. Subsequent episodes of the eight-episode season will continue to air Sundays on HBO and HBO Max leading up to the season finale on Sunday, December 14."
What happened in the first episode?
The Welcome to Derry premiere followed three kids, Lilly, Teddy Uris (Stanley Uris's Uncle), and Phil, as they try to find out what happened to their friend Matty Clements. Unknown to them, Pennywise had already killed Matty in the opening minutes of the episode. The main storyline of the episode mostly focuses on the three trying to solve the case with Ronnie Grogan's help, who was the last to see Matty.
Over the course of the episode, we see Pennywise haunt Lilly and Teddy, and Ronnie claims to experience the same off-screen as well. Simultaneously, the episode also sets up another loser club member as Mike Hanlon's grandfather is stationed by the Air Force in Derry.
The episode gives the impression that Teddy, Phil, his sister Susie, Lilly, and Ronnie are going to investigate the Derry disappearances before Bill, Beverley, Richie, Stanley, Eddie, and Ben would do almost twenty years later in the 1980s. But the episode pulls the rug under the viewers and kills off Phil, Susie, and Teddy. Only Ronnie and Lilly survive the episode, meaning we will get new protagonists in the second episode.
