After years of talks about the clown, the scary origins of Pennywise are finally about to come to light, revealing how the cursed history began. From returning cast members to a few new ones and a timeline that looks back at decades, here’s everything you need to know about the release date, where to stream it, and who’s joining the circus.

When does the nightmare begin? The release date you need to note down

There’s something hauntingly poetic about October being the chosen month for IT: Welcome to Derry. The awaited prequel officially releases on October 26 on HBO Max, which is perfect as it's the month of Halloween.

HBO Max also teased fans with a post that reads, “Everyone’s dying to see IT,” and let’s be honest, they’re not wrong because we are dying to watch it. This show has been one of HBO's most talked-about horror releases, and it definitely seems to be that way for good reason.

The show looks further into Stephen King's universe and will be expanding the terrifying lore that was first brought to life by director Andy Muschietti in his record-breaking IT films.

IT: Welcome to Derry will be taking a step back in time, and will be tracing Derry’s dark beginnings long before the Losers’ Club ever even existed. If the films made you fear the sewers, this series will make you fear the town itself.

Streaming details for IT: Welcome to Derry

If you’re planning a horror binge night, you’ll find IT: Welcome to Derry exclusively on HBO Max on October 26. With the same creative minds behind the original IT movies, this show vouches for the very same scary atmosphere, only this time it will be delivered straight into your home.

The show comes from Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs, the team behind the IT franchise and its dread.

Set during the 1950s and 60s, the show looks into the town’s cursed past and the scary origins of Pennywise the clown. HBO Max describes it best. The synopsis for IT: Welcome to Derry reads;

“Set in the world of Stephen King’s IT universe, IT: Welcome to Derry is based on King’s IT novel and expands the vision established by filmmaker Andy Muschietti in the feature films IT and IT: Chapter Two.”

So yes, grab your popcorn...and maybe also a nightlight.

Meet the Cast of IT: Welcome to Derry

The big question fans have been asking: Is Bill Skarsgård back as Pennywise? Thankfully, yes! Skarsgård returns to the red balloon and creepy smile, reprising his role as the dancing clown who feeds on fear (and oops, also occasionally children).

Skarsgård’s eerie smile and his unpredictable energy made Pennywise an instant horror legend among a much more contemporary audience, and his return guarantees nightmares just as they did a few years ago.

Joining him are a set of exciting names like Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, James Remar, Stephen Rider, Madeleine Stowe, and Rudy Mancuso. Together, they bring new life into the people of Derry, a town that can’t seem to escape its sinister past.

Behind the scenes, Andy and Barbara Muschietti will be producing the show through Double Dream, along with Jason Fuchs of FiveTen Productions. The team also reportedly has a three-season plan, with each season looking back at time periods that have haunted Derry’s cursed history. Season 1 takes place in 1962, season 2 in 1935, and finally season 3 in 1908.

So, it sure does sound like we’ll be haunted for quite a while, and honestly? We're all here for IT.

IT: Welcome to Derry is a chilling return to one of Stephen King’s most terrifying worlds. With Bill Skarsgård back as Pennywise and Andy Muschietti guiding the madness, the show promises to be dark and deeply unsettling.

Mark your calendars for October 26 and stream it on HBO Max, because once you visit Derry, you may never look at balloons the same way again.
