IT: Welcome to Derry Episode 5 - Matty returns as the Army invades the Neibolt Street Well House

IT: Welcome to Derry Episode 5, "29 Neibolt Street" delivers on its promise of a tense and action-packed episode. Leroy Hanlon leads the army in a raid on the haunted well house. As that happens, Matty is revealed to be alive and takes the kids to the sewers on their insistence. Also, IT: Welcome to Derry Episode 5 finally reveals the woman Hank Grogan is having an affair with.

Here are some of the major events in IT: Welcome to Derry Episode 5:

• Rose visits Taniel

We see Taniel suffering from a fit after Dick Hallorann invaded the former's mind in the previous IT: Welcome to Derry episode. Rose learns that her nephew is in custody and meets him. She requests that Francis Shaw allow her to join the army as they raid the well house, but he refuses. However, she manages to convince him that Taniel leads them.

She meets Taniel in his cell and gives him the dagger, fashioned from the meteorite, that is Pennywise's only weakness. Rose advises Taniel to hold on to the dagger for safety.

• Matty returns

IT: Welcome to Derry Episode 5 shocked viewers by revealing Matty's survival in the first act of the episode. Lilly, Will, Rich, and Ronnie meet an alive Matty in their hideout. When Ronnie asks Matty to go to the police, he refuses to do so because they'll send him back to his father. Matty also reveals that Phil is alive, while confirming Teddy and Susie's deaths.

Lilly visits Ingrid, her only friend in Juniper Hill, and expresses her desire to go down to the sewers to rescue Phil. But Ingrid makes Lilly promise that the latter won't risk her life. This scene also confirms that Ingrid is also the butcher, Stanley Kersh's wife. This furthers the theory that Ingrid might also be one of Pennywise's forms, because Beverley meets a "Mrs. Kersh" in the 2019 movie.

• The Army raids the house

The second act of this episode kicks off with the army led by Taniel invading the well house. They locate the well and descend into it. After doing so, the troops are separated from each other. Dick Hallorann is pulled into a vision where his abusive grandfather forces him to open a mysterious locked box. For those who don't know, Doctor Sleep reveals that Hallorann locked up evil spirits in a box.

The closing minutes of the episode show an open box, suggesting that Hallorann will be busy the next few episodes with containing the ghosts of the past. Dick is not the only one having a terrible time, though. Leroy and Pauly encounter Charlotte; only the former can see. Taniel abandons the soldiers but loses the dagger. It is unclear if he is dead or not, as of now.

• Hank Grogan is transferred to Shawshank

The Derry Police Department is loading Hank in the bus to be transferred to Shawshank Prison. Phil and Susie Malkin's father is about to shoot Hank, but the police stop him, and Grogan safely boards the bus. However, the next scene reveals that the bus met with an accident before it left Derry, and Hank is a fugitive as he is on the run. He meets his girlfriend, who turns out to be:

• Ingrid Kersh

She gets into a car to drive to Juniper Hill Asylum as Hank reveals himself to her in the backseat. They drive to the forest, where we learn that they were both together on the night Phil, Susie, and Teddy died in the IT: Welcome to Derry premiere. Hank suggests that Ingrid meet Charlotte Hanlon, which she does.

• The Kids mount a rescue mission

Lilly offers Matty two options: Either take her and her friends to the sewers to rescue Phil, or she drags him to the Police. Matty agrees to take her, Ronnie, Will, Rich, and Marge to the sewers. As the kids are in the entrance to the sewer, they take Lilly's mother's pills to control their fears.

However, the pills make the kids feel a bit high, and they come across the bodies of Susie, Teddy, Phil, and Matty, revealing:

• Pennywise, the Dancing Clown

Matty transforms into the clown, marking Pennywise's first appearance in IT: Welcome to Derry. The kids run away from Pennywise, but Lilly stumbles in the middle, and no one realizes that she's left behind. Therefore, Pennywise is about to kill Lilly when Taniel's glowing shard is between him and her. The demonic entity stands on his tracks and backs off, and Lilly holds the shard.

Meanwhile, Marge, Ronnie, Will, and Rich run into Leroy and Pauly. Leroy, however, doesn't believe his son is in front of him and suspects him to be the entity. Pauly tries to convince Leroy that he can also see Will, but the latter fires the bullet. Pauly takes the bullet for Leroy's son, saving Will's life. Dick Hallorann comes across a zombified Pauly in the closing minutes of the episode.
