IT: Welcome to Derry Episode 4 ended with a setup for an action-packed fifth episode. Dick Hallorann learns where to find the demonic entity (Pennywise) by psychically pulling the location out of Rose's nephew Taniel's mind. The closing frame of the Welcome to Derry episode is that of the Well House in Neibolt Street. This Well House is where the Losers find Pennywise in the 2017 and 2019 movies.

Now that the US Army is aware of Pennywise's location, it is a matter of time before it invades the Well House to confront the entity. IT: Welcome to Derry has been building up to the fifth episode, "Neibolt Street", where we may learn if the army manages to use Pennywise's powers or not. We will find out what happens next this coming Sunday.

What happens in Welcome to Derry Episode 4?

The fourth episode, "The Great Swirling Apparatus of Our Planet's Function", continues the kids' attempts to prove Hank Grogan's innocence. Meanwhile, Charlotte gets involved in this case and attempts to prove Hank's innocence. Meanwhile, Pennywise haunts another student as the military is on his tail. The synopsis for the episode reads:

"As the kids face increasingly terrifying experiences, Charlotte attempts to advocate for Hank, and General Shaw escalates his efforts."

In the second act of the episode, IT: Welcome to Derry does foreshadow Will Hanlon's dark fate as the kid is dragged by Pennywise, who has taken the form of a burnt Leroy, to tell him, "You'll burn too". 2017's IT confirms that Will and his wife died in a fire accident, leaving behind his son Mike, who is raised by the boy's grandfather Leroy Hanlon.

Blake Cameron James, who plays Will, described his experience in filming this scene:

“That scene was the most physically taxing scene I think I’ve ever done. The water was so cold. It was so cold. I’ve never been that cold a day in my life, I promise you. Even to this day, I’ve never been that cold a day in my life, ever. The first time I went under [the water] and got fully submerged, I came up, and I think my body was in shock because I couldn’t move. I couldn’t breathe, for real. So I had to get another take… But it was crazy, and I’m very proud of the results of it.”

But the grisliest scene in this IT: Welcome to Derry episode is the one Marge's eyes pop out like those of the worms she was spooked by in the scene before that. A traumatized Marge is about to stab her eye sockets out before Lilly saves her life. But all the students who just walked believe that Lilly was the one who hurt Marge. The next episode will show what happens next.

Marge actress Matilda Lawler addressed this scene in the TVInsider interview:

“Marge has a very complicated relationship with herself, and with kind of a sense of belonging. She’s in a place when she’s trying to fit in with a group of people that she doesn’t really fit in with, and she’s kind of trying to change herself, to find herself, which I think is such a common experience that every person can relate to. She’s deeply insecure about so many things, but one of the main things being her glasses. And so it was very fun, especially as a teen girl, being able to kind of scream about it and scream about the insecurities, because It preys on Marge’s insecurities.” The outcome of the experience, though, is that she’s oddly settled by it. “The scare scene with the eyes does have a centering effect on Marge and kind of causes her to reflect on her relationships and see the truth in a way and see that she belongs with her friend Lilly and with the ‘Losers,’ and it’s OK for her to find herself elsewhere, not in the group that you know everyone thinks she should be in.”

The last ten minutes of this IT: Welcome to Derry episode are dedicated to Dick Hallorann learning Pennywise's backstory. He does so by using his shine powers on Taniel, who has been spying on the military's dig sites.

Four episodes of IT: Welcome to Derry are available through streaming on HBO Max. Watch them before the fifth one releases on Sunday.
