Rather, it is set in a different time of the same year. A young boy has a tense encounter with Pennywise, but he survives this ordeal. This boy would grow up to be James Remar's General Francis Shaw. We also learn that young Rose (adult version played by Kimberly Guerrero) helped Shaw in 1908.Now, an adult Francis aims to use the demonic entity that once haunted him against the USSR, as the first two episodes of IT: Welcome to Derry also alluded to the Cuban Missile Crisis. He is using Dick Hallorann's abilities to track the entity. Speaking of which, Pennywise is aware that the US military is looking for him and is almost successful in killing Dick by making him jump off the chopper flown by Leroy Hanlon and Pauly. But Leroy prevents Dick from jumping, an experience that leaves the latter a bit shaken. Hanlon invites the psychic for dinner at his place the same night, where the former learns Hallorann's "shine" powers. They also have an exchange where some are convinced that even Leroy might have some of Dick's abilities. Meanwhile, the kids try to lure Pennywise to click the latter's photographs and prove Hank Grogan's innocence. They even manage to capture the silhouette of Pennywise's clown form, and the episode comes to a close. One of the showrunners, Brad Caleb Kane, even addressed why we haven't seen more of Bill Skarsgård's Pennywise in the HBO prequel series in a Deadline interview published after the third episode:“There’s a tendency in horror series, as the series goes along, for people to lean on the comedy of it and for it to feel less horrific. People love Pennywise as a character now. He’s funny, he’s spooky, but is he truly scary anymore once you’ve taken him into your life and made him a part of the pop culture in the way he’s become? I think so, yes, he is definitely still scary, but we wanted to go back…and really make him scary again, as scary as possible [to] really make the fears that much higher [and] really make the set pieces that much scarier.”Four episodes of IT: Welcome to Derry and two Andy Muschietti-directed IT movies are available on HBO Max.
