The new supernatural horror television series It: Welcome to Derry has already garnered significant hype among fans eager to explore the darker side of the history of Derry, Maine. The series is a prequel to the 2017 and 2019 film adaptations of Stephen King's novel It.

Taking place decades earlier than the original narrative, this show will dive into the genesis and ghostly chronology before the terrifying appearance of Pennywise the Clown. With the series set to debut on HBO on October 26, 2025, plenty of fans wonder just how expansive this new chapter will be, or more specifically, how many seasons the series will have.

Co-created by Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs (the creators of the earlier IT films) and featuring Bill Skarsgård reprising his role as Pennywise, It: Welcome to Derry is not a limited series. Showrunners and creators have made it clear that the television series itself has been designed with a multi-season arc in mind.

The series creator and director, Andy Muschietti, who has worked on both IT films as well as this HBO prequel, revealed that the series plans to run a total of three seasons while speaking on Radio TU. Each season will be set in a different era, with time shifting backwards by 27 years per season. This arrangement can be considered compatible with the lore of Stephen King, wherein Pennywise wakes up every 27 years to wreak havoc in the town of Derry.

Muschietti stated:

“It’s a story that’s based on the interludes of the book. The interludes are basically chapters that reflect Mike Hanlon’s research. They’re fragments of his research. For 27 years, it’s the guy trying to figure out what it is, what did it, who did it, who saw it, and all that stuff.”
“So they talk about catastrophic events from the past, like the fire in the Black Spot…. the massacre of the Bradley Gang, a gang of bank robbers in the ’30s… and the explosion of the Kitchener Ironworks. Every time [Pennywise] comes out of hibernation, there is a catastrophic event that happens at the beginning of that cycle.”

Season one of It: Welcome to Derry will premiere in October 2025. It is based on the story of a couple, Charlotte and Leroy Hanlon, who relocate to Derry when a boy disappears, marking the start of a chain of evil events that herald the return of Pennywise.

Subsequent seasons will go way back in time, with the second season set in 1935 and the third set in 1908. Those periods are related to the past tragic events discussed in the cycle of hibernation and the terror in the life of Pennywise.

Warner Bros., the studio behind the project, has been enthusiastic about the development of the first season, and they are reportedly eager to quickly proceed to the second season after the first has been broadcast.

It: Welcome to Derry is a much-hyped entry into the IT horror universe that will release on HBO Max, with the first season containing nine episodes. The series is intended to expand the mythology already developed in the films and the original novel by exploring events that occurred before the events of the films.

The cast of the show includes Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk as a young Dick Halloran, James Remar, Stephen Rider, Madeleine Stowe, and Bill Skarsgård re-enacting the chilling role of Pennywise the Clown.

It: Welcome to Derry will also allow audiences to learn more about legendary places like the Neibolt House, which is claimed to be the entrance to the world of Pennywise and plays a major role in the story of Season 1.

Andy Muschietti has expressed enthusiasm about returning to this place and its deepened significance in the show. The story opens in 1962 when the Hanlon family moves into Derry, and a little boy goes missing, leading to a frightening series of supernatural events involving Pennywise.

Future seasons will examine the nature and source of the horror of Pennywise, with various calamities occurring during different periods, representing the 27-year-long cycle that the show is known to revisit.

Having a premiere date of October 26, 2025, It: Welcome to Derry is already on the list of the most anticipated TV releases of the year, as it promises to blend horror, mystery, and lore into a compelling anthology-type show. The use of recognizable elements of the IT universe and new plotlines creates a promising groundwork for those who admire the world of Stephen King and the legendary film adaptations.
