The Big Bang Theory is a one-of-a-kind sitcom, which referenced many pop culture shows and made nerd culture look cool.
The four friends, Sheldon, Leonard, Raj, and Howard, are certified Trekkies and Whovians, and regularly host Dungeons & Dragons nights, adding to the natural charm of the show.
While Jim Parsons' Sheldon holds many shows close to his heart, even calling out the makers for cancelling them, Star Trek has a special place in his heart.
The Big Bang Theory is rife with Star Trek references, and many actors, including William Shatner, Wil Wheaton, and Leonard Nimoy (voice), have also appeared on the show.
However, in a Time interview, Parsons revealed that, despite Sheldon being such a fan of the show in The Big Bang Theory, the actor has never seen Star Trek.
More on this in our story.
Jim Parsons is not a Star Trek aficionado like his character in The Big Bang Theory
While Sheldon is a true Trekkie in The Big Bang Theory, Jim Parsons has never watched Star Trek, as he revealed in a 2011 interview with Time:
"I get asked a lot of, of course, science things. I'm like, 'You're kidding.' And even the pop culture. ... I've never seen 'Star Trek.' I don't know 'Doctor Who.'"
While Sheldon would have judged Parsons hard, the actor was open about his contrasting pop culture interests from his character, which makes his portrayal even more interesting.
While Parsons is not a fan of Star Trek in real life, Sheldon breathes the show in The Big Bang Theory and often quotes the scenes to Penny (which goes above her head most of the time).
In addition to Star Trek, Sheldon is also a certified Whovian, who even said that the replacement of every Doctor Who felt like a personal loss to him. However, unlike Sheldon, Parsons has never watched the show in real life.
Parsons might not be a Trekkie in real life, but his character makes up for it in the show. Many episodes and Sheldon's best scenes are focused on his love for the series.
Germ-phobic Sheldon even hugs Penny when she gifts him a napkin used by Leonard Nimoy (Spock) at the Cheesecake Factory.
In addition, Sheldon has many action figures of Star Trek characters. He had also declared Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher) to be his mortal enemy because he failed to show up at a convention that Sheldon traveled to meet him.
However, Wheaton rights his wrongs and becomes one of Sheldon's close friends, appearing in many TBBT episodes, along with other guest stars.
Jim Parsons struggled with memorizing Sheldon's lines in The Big Bang Theory
While Sheldon speaks fluent science (and Klingon), Jim Parsons is not equipped with his character's savvy knowledge, which is why it took him some time to get familiar with the jargon.
Parsons' reveal only highlights his differences with his character, which makes his portrayal of Sheldon even more commendable. A high IQ genius and with a rampant knowledge of science, Parsons struggled with memorizing the technical jargon and terms Sheldon quotes in real life, as he discussed with NPR:
"I really just [run] rampant around my apartment saying these words, this dialogue over and over. I'd go outside and say it. I'd sit down and say it. I'd stand up and run while staying [sic] it. Because I thought 'I need to be able to trust myself to have these words come out.'"
Parsons' perfect portrayal won him four Emmys and a Golden Globe award for The Big Bang Theory.
