The opening for Peacemaker, the HBO series, is iconic as the main and a few side characters dance to Wig Wam's "Do Ya Wanna Taste It". In it, all the characters maintain a straight face while dancing as if they are all puppetted. This opening played before every episode of the season. It became so popular that people did not skip the intro, making it a topic of discussion three years after its release.

This is why it was surprising to hear that Christopher Smith/Peacemaker actor John Cena initially thought the opening titles of the HBO Max series were stupid. Simultaneously, Cena also revealed that despite his misgivings, he and fellow cast members went ahead and shot the sequence as we got it in the series, and the rest is history.

What did John Cena say about the Peacemaker opening?

Last week, John Cena appeared on a FanExpo Denver panel on Saturday, July 5, 2025. The said panel was hosted by Maggie Lovitt, who serves as the Deputy Editor at Collider. In that panel, Cena went on to discuss Peacemaker and the season 1 opening. Revealing that he initially struggled while filming the opening, Cena said:

“I'll give you a tale of two cities. So the dance sequence was written in the original script of the original [pilot], and it was written as you see it — like we go through this crazy collaborative dance where we have no expression, and again, we're breathing heavy, and you still see no expression."

Based on the quote above, Cena was struggling with how to perform the scene while reading the Peacemaker script. Despite thinking that the scene looked ridiculous, Cena revealed that he and other cast members continued filming it, trusting Gunn. John Cena's exact words were:

“And for two days, we thought it was the stupidest thing. And everybody was like, too cool for school. But they eventually got some tapes where we all went along and we all did practice. You know, did the stuff.”

However, if you are excited to see this opening when season 2 streams in August, it should be noted that Wig Wam's "Do Ya Wanna Taste It" will not be used for the opening of the second season. James Gunn himself confirmed that the song will not be used for the second season in the February 2025 press conference.

The filmmaker justified the decision based on the fact that the song might've lost its importance as people expected it. However, in an Entertainment Weekly interview on May 26, 2025, Gunn revealed that the new Peacemaker opening will feature one particular character attempting to dance: Chris's pet eagle, Eagly. Gunn said:

"I'll give you an exclusive: You get to see Eagly try to dance for the first time. So that's really something. He is not the best at it, but he tries to really join in the dance sequence at the end. He's got a little pose this time."
