HBO’s highly anticipated series, Harry Potter, is expected to be on our screens in 2027 and has recently begun filming. Based on J.K. Rowling’s fan-favorite novels, the fantasy series is set to transport us to the magical world of the noy who lived.
As a new ensemble cast has been hired to play the beloved characters, there have been comparisons between the movies and the upcoming TV show. However, Jason Isaacs, who played Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, is all praise for Johnny Flynn, who is cast to play the malicious character.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he said:
"Johnny will do his own thing. Maybe he'll be more charming."
More on this in our story.
Jason Isaacs praises Johnny Flynn’s casting in HBO’s Harry Potter series
With a brand new cast, HBO's upcoming Harry Potter series is set to take us back to Hogwarts. While the films, based on the books, are still considered as one of the best franchise films, the show has to live up to a lot, as comparisons are bound to happen.
Amid that, Isaacs stated that Flynn, who will play Draco’s father, Lucius, whom Isaacs played in the films, might infuse his own style and make it his own, just like he did in the movies by coming up with his own look.
To add to his previous comment, he said:
"I doubt that he'll look like me, because that was the look I came up with, and he's far too original to want to copy anything."
When asked if the British actor and musician had contacted him before taking up the role in the Harry Potter series, he did not reveal that. However, he shared about him texting Flynn as they had worked together in a film called Operation Mincemeat.
He shared:
"I texted him, and I can say that because that's my domain to talk about. I texted because we did a film together and we were friendly. He's absolutely delightful and phenomenally talented, and I have no doubt he's going to do something completely different from what I did because I did my own thing."
Jason Isaacs comments on the Harry Potter series
HBO’s Harry Potter is set to delve deeper into the books than the films; however, since the story, the themes, and the fictional world are the same, they will still be compared to the films, in some capacity. Further, the English actor also stated that with a new set and fresh scripts, the series will certainly be different from the movies.
He stated:
"They're redesigning everything from scratch. They're redesigning Hogwarts and the costumes and they're writing all these fabulous new scripts that are expanding each book into whole season. And it'll be fab — it'll be for a new generation. It'll be their version of Harry Potter."
He also added:
"It all starts and comes from the books, and the books are beloved."
Apart from Flynn, Isaacs also revealed that he is excited to see the performance of the ensemble cast. He shared:
"Johnny's great. I can't wait to see what everyone does, frankly, all the cast are amazing. I'm really looking forward to seeing what John Lithgow does. All of them. It's going to be fab because it's not like I watch the films, because I'm in them, so that's a bit weird for me. But now I can watch them with unalloyed fandom instead of thinking there's a narcissism of watching myself."
