Jim's getting killed was not the only shocking twist the fans were taken off guard by in Season 3 of From. Just moments before Jim’s brutal death, a future version of Julie Matthews suddenly materialises on screen! Although Julie's time travel in the show feels like a page right out of Fromland's pre-established time-bending rule book, this time it's getting more central, suggesting that the town wants her to piece things together.

However, her time travel abilities seem to be a curse as well as a gift. She gains insights because of her abilities, but as Ethan states, she isn't capable of changing or rewriting anything. Therefore, this gives her enough knowledge to guide the residents and help them, but limits her from being a saviour by changing anything for good.

This does not affect the importance of her role, since Fromland is a place with scarce information, and even the little moments and epiphanies matter. Like Lost, even this show weaves personal tragedy with cosmic mystery while also leaning more into horror, with the town itself acting like a living trap. People are either left to follow the absurd rules or lose their lives. It is less metaphysical and more dreadful.

Amidst this, Julie's time-travel ability in Season 3 just adds another mysterious layer to the show.

Here is how Julie's time-travelling ability is adding another mysterious layer to From

As mentioned, Julie has the ability to acquire information about events, providing insight and means to unfold the town's mystery for the residents and the viewers alike. However, even after being equipped with new information, she is not capable of actively rewriting anything for them. Therefore, although Julie's time-travel ability makes her role significant, her inability to save others' lives ends up inflicting more guilt onto her.

Julie, despite the knowledge that her father was going to be killed, couldn't save him. This suggests that Fromland operates under some fixed rules of fate, where key events can't be undone. Henceforth, her time travel ability is more for understanding why a tragedy happened instead of preventing it all.

But this could mark a shift in the series, as now, with more knowledge about the future events, the residents, rather than just reacting to the predicament, might just start anticipating and preparing for it to come. Even if big events can't be stopped, Julie's vision can help them plan ahead of time.

What does Julie's time-travelling ability mean for the show?

First and foremost, Julie's ability raises questions about its origins. How did she acquire the ability to travel through time? Are we sure that it is the town bending or controlling time for these residents? If that's so, how trustworthy are Julie's visions? Is she caught in some experiment other than a simulation?

All of these questions point out how Fromland isn't just a prison but a labyrinth that twists reality to test people inside.

With Julie's power, Season 3 could be an attestation for the residents that even if they anticipate the impending disaster, they remain powerless. Therefore, Julie's burden doesn't just include Jim but also living with the information and still watching people suffer and die.

However, where this unique ability leads is only to be seen in Season 4. Julie might end up learning something crucial or might be able to overpower the creatures at some point. Indeed, this will offer more insights about the Fromland and its "rules" in the coming episodes.
