Top Chef Season 22 Finale Part 1 aired on June 5, 2025. The latest episode, featuring the Top 4 finalists, featured the last elimination of the season. César Murillo was sent home after his butternut squash casserole with gorgonzola and sage pesto didn't impress the judges.
After the show host Kristen Kish announced his elimination, César confessed that he was "proud" of himself. He was referring to reaching such a stage in the culinary competition and going to Europe for the first time, while on the show.
He also talked about how much he had grown as a person and as a chef since being on Top Chef:
"I got to see myself grow as a person and as a chef. The part that I'm bummed out about, I was just one more away from, like, the final cook. I just wanted that one more."
Top Chef Season 22 Finale Part 1: César Murillo becomes the last cheftestant to get eliminated from the show
For the third round of challenges on the show's finale part 1, César Murillo decided to make a butternut squash casserole. He paired that with gorgonzola and sage pesto. Fellow cheftestant, Bailey, prepared crispy polenta with bruleed gorgonzola.
Earlier in the challenge, her bruleed bleu cheese didn't impress the judges, so Bailey was anxious to make it right. Even though it was a risk, she wanted to take that, as they were all in the show's finale, and she wanted to move forward.
Later, when the judges tasted their dishes, they were impressed with Bailey's dish, which meant César Murillo was headed home.
"César, please pack your knives and go," announced Kristen Kish.
Seeing him getting eliminated, the host and fellow cheftestants were all emotional.
Shedding light on why he was eliminated, Top Chef judge Tom Colicchio told him:
"César, you put together a really great dish. Bailey's was a litle more focused on the gorgonzola. That's the only reason.
Fellow judge Gail Simmons also thanked him before he went home. She told him that it was an "incredible journey" getting to know him.
"I'm just telling myself over and over, like, how proud I am of me, I got to go to Europe for the first time. I got to see myself grow as a person and as a chef," said César.
He added that the only thing that he was "bummed out" was that it was one step away from the "final cook."
After César Murillo's elimination from Top Chef Season 22 Finale Part 1, the Top 3 finalists advanced to the second part finale. It included Bailey, Shuai, and Tristen.
