Karen Read, whose story will be adapted in Prime Video’s new series starring Elizabeth Banks, recently shared her thoughts about the upcoming series. In her first interview after being found not guilty in the case of her boyfriend’s death, she talked about how she did not authorize the Prime Video show.
While talking with talk show host Howie Carr, Read said:
"I have nothing to do with that; it’s not authorized by me in any way."
More on this in our story.
Karen Read’s comments on Elizabeth Banks' series about her trial
Earlier, it was reported that Elizabeth Banks will executive produce and star in a series about Read’s trial, where she was accused of killing her boyfriend, John O’Keefe, in 2022. The Boston police officer died due to blunt force trauma to his head, which prosecutors accused Karen Read of causing after she backed her car while under the influence of alcohol.
After her second trial in early 2025, Read was found not guilty of all the charges, such as manslaughter and first-degree murder. Elizabeth Banks will star as Karen Read in the potential series, which will showcase Read’s trial.
As per The Hollywood Reporter, the logline of the series reads as:
"Society’s obsession with true crime, the allure of conspiracy, and the deepening crisis of trust in our institutions."
However, recently, Read let everyone know that she was not attached to the series and had never talked to Banks.
To add to her previous comments, she said:
"There is more to this story — I won’t say another side, I think that the public at large knows this story, they know the truth, but there’s a lot more to it than what, I think, Elizabeth Banks knows at this point."
She added:
"I’ve never spoken to her. I have not blessed this, no."
She also shared that she had heard that Banks was tapped to play her in the series, but the actress never reached out to talk to her and said:
"She knows who our contacts are. Yeah, we’re not hard to find."
In addition to Read’s comments, her lawyer, Alan Jackson, also spoke about Elizabeth Banks’s show in the interview and shared that Read should have been consulted for a show that will be based on one of the major events in her life.
He stated:
"At the end of the day, this is Karen Read’s story to tell; it’s not Hollywood’s story to make up and to fill in blanks that they want to fill in, to take poetic license, literary license, movie license … It’s a little bit of a shame that she was never even consulted, never even contacted."
While Banks is leading the Prime Video series, Read and her lawyer are working with LBI Productions, known for producing films such as Hell or High Water and Killers of the Flower Moon, to curate a scripted project that will detail everything about Read’s case.
