The Spot, which received a straight-to-series order on Hulu in 2024, is now undergoing a major casting change, as Kate Winslet has dropped out of the project, according to Deadline. When the project was announced, Winslet was set to star as the lead and also serve as the executive producer.

The official logline of the show mentions,

“When a successful surgeon and her schoolteacher husband begin to suspect that she may be responsible for a child’s hit-and-run death, their quest for truth spirals into a web of mounting suspicion and dark secrets, testing their resolve and their relationship as they confront the possibility of hidden guilt and betrayal.”

With Winslet out of the picture, the team is now looking into other A-list actors, and production is still scheduled to start in 2026 once the casting issue is resolved.

Kate Winslet reportedly left The Spot due to creative differences and the show’s changing direction, Deadline reported. Ed Solomon will serve as the showrunner, creator, and executive producer, as announced in 2024.

A24 is the lead studio for the project. Solomon has previously worked on projects such as Men in Black, No Sudden Move, and Full Circle, among others. Additionally, he has writing credits on films like Now You See Me, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, and Levity, among others.

Winslet has been doing impressive work on TV over the past few years. She previously starred in HBO’s Mare of Easttown, a role that earned her an Emmy. She also starred in HBO’s The Regime. In 2011, she starred in HBO’s Mildred Pierce, which also earned her an Emmy.

While Winslet’s departure has created a tough situation for Hulu, this isn't the first time the streamer has faced something like this. In 2021, Kate McKinnon, who was set to executive produce and star in The Dropout, left the project. Amanda Seyfried was later cast in her place and won an Emmy.

Similar issues arose last year when Margaret Qualley left the upcoming Amanda Knox limited series, and Grace Van Patten was cast instead. Casting problems are therefore nothing new for Hulu, and the streamer is likely to find its new lead for The Spot soon and start production according to the previously planned timeline.

The Spot will be available to stream on Hulu upon its release.
