It has been almost three years since we last saw Kevin Costner on television screens. The actor exited Yellowstone after Season 5A in 2023 and shifted his focus to movies. Ever since, audiences have been awaiting his return to television.

The wait is going to end soon, albeit in a different way than we expected. Costner is soon coming back to TV, but not with a fiction show. Instead, he will be hosting a holiday special feature on ABC.

The actor will be seen in Kevin Costner Presents: The First Christmas. The two-hour special feature will chronicle Jesus Christ’s birth. It will be broadcast on ABC on December 9, 2025, at 8 PM ET / PT.

Kevin Costner to host ABC’s The First Christmas special

On November 4, 2025, ABC announced its Christmas special lineup for this year. The lineup includes various films, shows, documentaries, animated series, and special features. A part of the roster is Kevin Costner Presents: The First Christmas, which will be aired on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, from 8 PM to 10 PM ET / PT. The official synopsis of the feature reads:

“Kevin Costner hosts the special exploring the extraordinary journey of Mary and Joseph as they navigate the hardships, trials, and triumphs surrounding Jesus Christ’s birth, offering an inspiring way to experience the true meaning of Christmas.”

ABC’s Christmas special lineup begins on November 27, 2025, and will go on till January 1, 2026. Other features that are a part of the schedule include The Wonderful World of Disney: Holiday Spectacular, Dancing with the Holidays, What Would You Do?: Holiday Edition, The Great Christmas Light Fight: “Christmas Vacation”, and The Great Christmas Light Fight: “You Decked My Battleship”. ABC will also release Christmas-themed episodes of its hit shows, like Abbott Elementary and Shifting Gears, during this time.

Coming back to Kevin Costner, the actor is not new to hosting. He previously served as the narrator on the 2015 documentary Billy the Kid: New Evidence. Earlier in 1995, he hosted the 8-part docuseries 500 Nations for CBS.

Yellowstone marked Costner's first television project as a series regular. He played the role of John Dutton III, the patriarch of the family that owns the titular ranch, in the series. The actor debuted the role in 2018 with the show’s inception and impressed everyone with his performance. However, he decided to quit the Western drama due to scheduling conflicts after the release of the first part of the fifth season in 2023.

The Yellowstone universe is now expanding with multiple spin-offs, while Costner has decided to focus on his film career. He wrote, directed, produced, and starred in the 2024 epic Western film Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, which unfortunately failed at the box office. Two more installments of the film franchise are currently in post-production.

Kevin Costner Presents: The First Christmas premieres on ABC on December 9, 2025.
