King & Conqueror Episode 2 recap: Godwin and his family meet King Edward
In Episode 2 of King & Conqueror, Harold talks to Godwin and asks about what he was going to talk to King Edward about. Godwin tells his son he will wait to see what the king is up to before doing anything.
While on the way to London, Harold and Godwin discuss how the throne keeps the power balance between the three earls, and it is important. However, Harold’s views differ from his father's in this, as he thinks there should be only one powerful entity that controls everything.
In London, Godwin is asked to give up his title and go into exile for breaking the peace agreement. Godwin asks if his people will be left unharmed if he decides to do that, to which Lady Emma says he has to promise never to come back. Godwin agrees to their terms and prepares to take his family out of London.
King & Conqueror Episode 2 recap: William reaches Flanders
While Godwin and his family lose everything in the second episode of King & Conqueror, Duke William is also not spared as Henry I invades Normandy. However, William survives with his family and stays hidden as his wife gives birth to a boy.
The birth of the boy disappoints William further, as he knows the boy will always be in danger, unlike a girl who could have escaped the conflicts. He later decides to go to Flanders to keep his family safe. Count Baldwin offers them shelter, but his words of protecting the family are not yet fully trusted by William and Matilda.
While William refuses to name or hold his son, he is worried about his life, as he wants to take revenge on Henry but knows it will eventually come back to his son. He then decides to send his son, whom he names Robert, to the family that Fitzosbern has found to make sure he stays safe during the time of waging wars.
King & Conqueror Episode 2 recap: Edith is captured by Morcar
While Godwin agrees to King Edward’s terms in episode 2 of King & Conqueror, the matter is still far from being settled. Morcar is not happy about the decision and confronts them, saying he was supposed to have Wessex for himself; that was the deal they made to provoke Godwin.
Lady Emma tells him that the people of Wessex are loyal to Godwin and will never accept anyone else. Further, she also suggests a solution for this and says perhaps Godwin’s death might clear their path.
This results in the Mercians attacking Godwin and his family, but they fail to kill Godwin. While the family escapes, Edith is left behind as she was trying to help someone, and later is captured by the Mercians. She later warns Morcar that when Harold finds out about it, he will not spare him.
Morcar’s sister finds out about Edith being pregnant. Elsewhere, at the end of the King & Conqueror episode, Harold also learns about Edith being captured by the Mercians and tries to save her, but is asked to go to Flanders by his family, which will then start the epic tale of rivalry between Harold and William.
